2017 BMW 440i X-Drive Grand Touring Retractable Hardtop

2017 BMW 440i X-Drive Grand Touring Retractable Hardtop

From the 2017 Dealer Brochure: The BMW 4 Series was meant for one thing: head turning performance.  Building on the refinement and dynamics of the BMW 3 Series, the 4 Series adds a fastback roofline and sinuous styling that will ensure those on the outside are definitely looking in.  With a power folding hardtop, available X-Drive all wheel drive and a powerful TwinPower Turbo engine, the 4 Series convertible offers fun for sun worshippers – even on a rainy day.  When the sun does come out, be ready with just the touch of a button.

For consignment, a sleek black on black 440i with just 43,806 title verified actual miles and all wheel drive.  It's been well maintained and the forward thinking style will remain relevant and modern for many years to come.  This would be a fantastic daily driver or that special weekend car for topless joy rides in the countryside.

Exterior
Looking a bit like the Batmobile, our car is covered in Black Sapphire Metallic with additional black items including the grille, gills, and color matched door handles.  Everyone knows black is a tough color to keep clean, but this car presents very well, evidence of proper care and likely garage occupancy.  It has an aggressive front fascia with gaping lower air intake and sculpted fog light indentations below flush mounted LED headlights that have an angry squint.  The steeply raked windshield, sloping roofline, and short decklid make for beautifully flowing lines while the pillarless cabin hints at the topless potential.  Double spoke light alloy wheels were one of seven options offered in 2017 and fit this car well.  The only imperfections we noted were some scrapes under the chin and curb rash on several of the wheels.

Interior
Sweeping modern lines and tight construction greet you with the door panel.  A hockey stick shaped aluminum accent breaks up the monochromatic black and the glossy black pull handle adds a bit of upscale bling.  The front bucket seats are first class with tall backs, thigh support, and notable bolstering; they also have more adjustment buttons than a Lockheed F-35 fighter jet.  They are black leather with black stitching as are the rear seats which have a simpler design.  If BMW is the ultimate driving machine, the driver's cockpit certainly aims to prove that.  The steering wheel feels great in the hand and has paddle shifters.  Critical gauges are front and center while a center screen displays navigation and other amenities.  The piano finish around the horizontal AM/FM/CD radio and A/C controls is stunning and another aluminum accent strip adds interest to an already fabulous design.  The seats, headrest, and steering wheel are heated, and the radio is Bluetooth capable.  Ash wood grain surrounds the screen control knob and a leather armrest is perfectly placed.  The low pile black carpet is in great shape protected by rubber weather mats and the charcoal headliner of the convertible hardtop is nearly flawless.

Drivetrain
The 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder gets an extra bump from a pair of turbochargers and the TwinPower technology that allows for more variability with the engine and helps improve fuel consumption.  There's more to it, but too much for this short introduction.  Suffice it to say, 320 horsepower is the result and it's got bal…er…guts.  It's tied to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift mode that is all wheel drive with 2.81 gears at both ends.  Power disc brakes are there to slow this bad boy down.

Undercarriage
Looking clean and completely original, this underside shows very little sign of age.  The occasional bolt with surface rust is almost not worth mentioning because it's the only thing discolored underneath.  There are more shields on the underside than exposed hardware and that not only protects it from road grime, but also helps with aerodynamics.  The single exhaust lands in a rear muffler that sends two chrome exhaust tips out the back.  For the independent suspension, BMW went with MacPherson struts in the front and multi-link in the rear.  The tires are geared for handling with 225/40R19's in front and 255/35R19's in rear and are from 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Drive-Ability
What can we say about a low mileage 4 Series BMW, there's a reason it received excellent reviews from car magazines when it was introduced.  Our test lap proved that this is a driver's car, great handling, smooth shifting, and significant acceleration.  The 440 does not disappoint.  Every function worked as it should and in short order and with some consternation, it was time to return to the Bat Cave.

The 1935 Peugeot 402 was the first hardtop convertible, but this 2017 BMW brings the desirable feature into the modern age.  If you're looking for a special car for daily use, or a Sunday driver with advanced technology, this BMW is worth a look.  In our short space here, we could only touch on some of the basics, the list of features and options is extensive.
