1980 Chevrolet El Camino SS Tribute

1980 Chevrolet El Camino SS Tribute

Among the first hybrid vehicles in the history of the automotive industry, the Chevrolet El Camino, a combination car-truck, featured the practicality of a pickup truck, while maintaining performance car status.  Chevy dealers across the U.S. showcase vintage models like the El Camino in their showrooms, while awaiting a possible new release.  Chevy promoted it as, “the most beautiful thing that ever shouldered a load!”.  Even claiming, “It rides and handles like a convertible yet hauls and hustles like the workingest thing on wheels.”

For consignment, a tribute version of the El Camino SS from 1980.  It has a less than 300 mile 305ci V8, new air shocks in the rear, new interior, and some SS badging and stripes for this tribute.

Note: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.

Exterior
Just like new for all the panels which were stripped, any rust, (which was light), was remediated, then it was completely straightened and sprayed with white paint nicely applied.  We can see some previous areas of repair with bondo and body filler on some of the lowers where seams are present.  From the hood to the back gate wide dual black SS stripes have been put on as well as some knockout SS badging on the front quarters.  Square and rectangle design has taken over for the grille with vertical ribs and square head lighting on each corner.  The bumper, which has a few scratches, is below and wraps around the front quarter.  A bottom stainless rocker trimming is on and looking good.  We see a sunroof now installed in the center of the cabin roof and its line gracefully descends to the bed where we see a stainless steel shiny edge trimming.  This starts the black painted in bed liner which is nicely textured and pristine.  It has a beautifully curved line at the rear glass and runs to the rear gate.  The gate is badged with knockout SS badges and more wide black stripes.  The shiny chromed bumper below houses the rear horizontal tail lights.  15-inch GM rally wheels are on with 205/70R15 blackwell rubber on all 4 corners.

Interior
Black vinyl covers the door panels of these long doors which provide easy access to the interior.  Speaking of which, they are like new black leather covered high back buckets.  In the center we note a black carpeted hump that houses a B&M shifter.  A square and rectangle design dash is in and it has black padded vinyl top various panels for the Boss AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth radio and temp sliders.  A wood appliqué wrap around design dash center for the gauge inserts.  Mounted in the center of the column is a white faced tachometer.  Below the dash to driver's right are a trio of Bosch aftermarket gauges for oil PSI, water temp and volts.  Black carpeting is on the floors and is very clean as well as the fuzzy broadcloth headliner above which remains nice and tight.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the like new, (less than 200 miles), 305ci V8.  It has a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and on back is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission.  The rear axle is a 10-bolt version.  There is dual Magnaflow exhaust snaking from this headered mill but we note the absence of a catalytic converter.  It's all shiny and emblazoned with chromed accents like the air cleaner covering and valve covers.  This engine has a 4 year warranty and break in oil will soon need to be changed.

Undercarriage
We lead off with a new fuel tank and fuel delivery system, and recently black sprayed frame and undercarriage floors.  No rust here, just pure unadulterated independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil springs for the back.  Power disc brakes are upfront and power drums for the rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth runner.  It handled nicely and stopped swiftly.  All functions were working save for the AC which has been removed.

A nicely done and upgraded car/truck which is looking just great on the exterior SS tribute front, and with the upgrades on the interior more functional than back in 1980.  A smooth runner and you can throw stuff in the back as well!
