1970 Chevrolet El Camino

1970 Chevrolet El Camino

Various versions of a particular model of vehicle have been offered up by manufacturers since the beginning of the automobile business.  Take the Ford Model A which was available in a wide array of body styles.  For the past 113 years GM has been doing the same thing, and one of the most successful and coolest versions has to be included in the A list as the El Camino.  A truly great crossover with the ability to go fast, as well as haul the “goods” if need be.

This always garage kept 1970 El Camino came to us starting life in snow free Arizona, then to a collection in PA, and now in our Hallowed Halls.  It has been stripped down to bare metal and repainted, and is solid as a rock for the exterior steel on the outside and undercarriage.  This work was completed a mere 2 months ago so it may still be wet!  The engine bay is about as near to showroom as you can get, and the interior is just beautifully finished.  Hop in, turn the key, and start enjoying your new purchase.  No wrenching, no mechanicals to sort out, no effort, just drive!

Exterior
Decked out in beautifully applied red paint, straight steel panels are all totally rust free, and minding their gaps nicely throughout.  The dual headlights front end is truly SS Malibu with its back egg crate split front grille with a central SS badge.  Newly plated bumpers frame the front and rear edges and shiny stainless trimmings encircle the wheel wells and passenger compartment glass.  Chromed mirrors hang off the doors and shiny handles allow you to access the wonderfully restored interior.  The bed is just pristine and lined with a black plastic ribbed liner.  The edges of the bed are also trimmed in shiny stainless.  The wonderful model from 1970 still has the tail lights on the edges of the quarters and in this writer's mind is much nicer than those in bumper examples of later models.  15-inch rally wheels are wrapped in 215/70R15's in front and 275/60SR15's on back all from the 8th week of 1997.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we can settle in nicely baby bear, here we pass nearly perfect vinyl vertical tuck and roll panels with smooth uppers and lowers.  An armrest is in door central and is covered with the matching broadcloth of the interior bench seat.  Shiny trimmings, actuators, and cranks are within the dark saddle fields and all are looking spicy.  As we slip inside we rest upon light tan broadcloth tuck and roll which has a nifty abstract bowtie/lightning bolt pattern stitched in it in darker brown.  For the edges we see piped saddle vinyl which are nice and smooth and offer darker accents to the edges.  As we gaze at the dash, it's true GM with its horizontal speedo and lineup of warning lighting on the bottom all in black.  A lower panel takes on the saddle and houses various vents, controls and the newer AM/FM/CD radio.  Temp sliders are above along with more vents.  Cresting the dash is a black, nicely padded, shined and crack free topper.  A few aftermarket gauges are hanging below the dash as well as a large tachometer mounted to the A pillar on the driver's side.  Beautiful saddle stitched edge carpeting is covering the floors and all are clean as can be.  A lovely tight light tan vinyl headliner is above.

Drivetrain
A heave of the hood reveals a completely restored engine bay looking just like it was when in the showroom.  Within its confines is a red/orange GM painted block in 350 cubes form.  It has shiny valve coverings and is not original to this truck/car.  There is an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on top, and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission on back.  A 10 bolt 2.56 gear ratio rear axle is stamped CGA.  Headers and a Flowmaster dual exhaust system is on for aiding the exhale.  Nice supple wires and hoses are throughout this mill.  No corrosion or surface rust and nary any dust even resides here with the engine.

Undercarriage
Extremely clean stamped floor pans, framing, and suspension parts are all sprayed in black and looking like new.  No rust, no road dirt here, just clean black steel.  Independent coil springs for the front suspension and a 4 link with coil springs is on the back.  Power disc brakes are on front, and power drums on back, all very nicely presenting in black except for the coil over rear shocks which are red.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and off to the test track where it did wonderfully.  Snappy acceleration for the 350 cuber, solid bias free panic stopping, and smooth shifting.  All functions were working just perfectly and the extra gauges are a plus to make sure all systems are go!

Always in the hands of owners who cared well for this example, now with a fresh coating of paint, snazzy interior, and healthy 350 mill, get in and go, but do so quickly as it is going to go itself..bye bye.
