1990 Dodge Dakota Convertible Pickup

1990 Dodge Dakota Convertible Pickup

Crisp sunshine, blue skies, and cool breezes are yours to enjoy.  Just pop the easy to operate top on the Dakota SE convertible and open up on good times.  This pickup combines the dramatic effects of the Dakota Sport with the open air excitement of a convertible.  -from the 1990 sales brochure.

For consignment, a rare bird open the air and open for business on the back end as a pickup bed.  Yes folks were talkkin' a convertible pickup.  Whaaaaaah? you may say.. well yeeeeaaaah we say!  And its one of only 909 produced in 1990.  For some trivia, only 8 were made in 1991.  So this special Daytona Blue version is showing off in great shape, has nifty late 80's graphics in white on its sides, and an upgraded and consignor-stated refreshed 318ci Magnum V8.  Lovely!

NOTE: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.

Exterior
So we start with a 1990 Dakota Sport featuring a blackout grille, stacked rectangular headlights and turn signals, a black wide bumper below and let's also wrap the wheel wells with the black plastic trims, and add a spoiler below the bumper and we are ready to cruise!  Deep Daytona Blue covers the steel panels of this truck which show slight areas of various stages of rust bubbling underneath the paint.  The gaps are being well minded and we see some intentional graphics using a fade technique on the uppers at the beltline of the truck.  These go from white to light gray and are factory applied.  A black rocker covering is below the doors and front and rear of the rear wheel wells.  A black lined ribbed bedliner is in the bed floor and sides and also the tailgate, so all is protected.  Another black bumper is on back and some dual tail pipes are peeking out from under the rear bumper.  And now for the piece' de resistance, with a black canvas convertible top.  Yes its covering and then not covering the cab area and this feature has rarely been seen, making this beauty truly special.  Drop the top and rely on the roll bar, let's get some sand in those tires!

Interior
With that top pwn let's have a peek at the interior where we swing the doors that reveal some gray molded plastic uppers and a tuck and roll light gray broadcloth panels inserted just above the molded plastic armrests.  A black rectangular panel houses the actuator and power window and door lock toggles and on the bottom is some darker gray carpeting and a stereo speaker.  Inside, for the chairs are high back broadcloth buckets with integrated headrests.  The broadcloth is nicely preserved and features tuck and roll inserts with smooth bolsters and some gray vinyl lower coverings.   These chairs are using some velour-esque broadcloth in light gray.  A black insert panel is just below the headrests.  A padded roll bar is directly behind the buckets and stretches above from side to side presenting in black.  It's still the 80's with the square and rectangle design for the dash which uses several of these shapes to create the dash.  Instruments are in black panels and the dash front is faux brushed aluminum.  The car has heat and fresh cool air capabilities.  There is an AM/FM /Cassette stereo just below.  A light gray padded dash top forms a shelf in front of the passenger and a glovebox resides below said shelf.  On the bottom of the dash are a trio of aftermarket gauges to motor oil pressure, volts and water temp.  All this menagerie floats on clean light gray carpeting with black floor mats for protection.

Drivetrain
Under the hood the mill is so bright you'd better wear shades.  Yes this gleaming example is now a Magnum 318ci V8 and our consignor states its been recently “refreshed”.  On top is a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and on back a consigner stated A904 3-speed automatic also recently “ refreshed”.  The rear axle weighs in at 8-1/4 inches.  Shiny ribbed valve coverings, a polished intake manifold, and bright blue painted cast engine block all add to the allure and work with supple hoses and wiring.  New body mounts, headers, and dual Flowmaster exhaust are on for the exhale.

Undercarriage
Pretty much stripped down, very slight surface rust on the frame, but all straight and structurally sound steel.  Independent coil springs, (like new), are in front and rear leaf springs, (also like new), form the suspension.  Power disc brakes are up front, and power drums on the rear, provide the woah!  Looking good in this undercarriage neighborhood with dual exhaust running to the rear of the truck but without catalytic converters.

Drive-Ability
Our courageous and sometimes overly brave test driver jumped right into this dri\op top pickup and had the full experience.  It fired right up he reported and ran very smoothly with lots-o-power.  Handling was great and the braking was bias free.  He did report the tachometer did not read rpm's but all else was in working order.

One of only 909 from the factory this White Hat Boys piece of history is writing what it will go down in, and is ripe for the low hanging fruit picking.  Guts Glory Ram, sans top!
