1937 Chevrolet Master Sedan

Hot rods first appeared in the late 1930s in southern California, where people raced modified cars on dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles, under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association, (SCTA), among other groups.  This gained popularity after World War II, particularly in California, because many returning soldiers had received technical training.  The first hot rods were old cars, (most often Fords, typically Model Ts, 1928–31 Model As, or 1932-34 Model Bs), modified to reduce weight.  Engine swaps often involved fitting the Ford flathead V8 engine, (known as the "flatty"), into a different car, which was common practice.

For consignment, this 30 year old build is an all steel, (save for the running boards), example of the 1937 GB Master sedan that has had many modifications from the original to create a unique vehicle, while maintaining the original overall shape by Harley Earl.  A great color combo, along with smooth wide fenders, a plush interior, air conditioning, snappy wheels, a ton of recent upgrades and repairs and a 350/TH350 combo in 2 door sedan rodded form.

Exterior
Rebuilt from the frame up, it is now bathed in clean well applied steel blue metallic from the curvalicious fenders and fiberglass running boards up to the slight body contour dip at the belt line.  From there an interesting ivory pearl takes over to finish the roof, hood, and passenger's compartment.  Some fading and clear coat degradation is noted in both of the colors along with various chip offs, scuffs and some bubbling rust on the lowers, but overall the car still presents very well.  A highly polished shield style stainless steel front grille is up front and is flanked by a single bullet cased headlight with new reflectors and LED bulbs for the turn signals just below on either side and a shiny bumper peeks out from the bottom of the rounded front fenders.  These fenders in front take a deep dive towards the long running boards then swoop back up and bulge out over the rear wheels for that perfect Art Deco look.  All chrome and brightwork remain in very good condition, not too much, not too little, just the right amount of bling.  Lightly smoked glass encircles the passengers and the large back side passenger window allows a panoramic view for the rear seat occupants.  Out back, the trunk of the car is in humpback style complete with small LED tail lights on metal stalks protruding rearward on either side.  A rear bumper curved in chrome brings up the back end and frames the trunk lid and 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are all around  and are wrapped by like new staggered radials. 

Interior
A swing of the doors reveals ivory upper window frames contrasted below by plush blue velour broadcloth that vies for space with a blue carpeted lower section.  Much like the exterior, all chrome for the actuators and cranks remains bright and shiny.  For the passengers, overstuffed navy blue buttoned velour buckets in front are in good condition, and a matching bench is in the rear, utilizes the similar overstuffed buttoned cloth also in blue.  Blue felting covers some of the inside panels and plush deep pile blue carpet floods the floors, all in good condition and waiting for a piggy wriggling.  A metal dash upfront painted in ivory shows with some snappy pinstriping surrounding the Vintage AC/heat controller in the center with a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player below.  In front of the driver is a polished billet bezel that holds antique white face AutoMeter gauges and is fronted by a blue rimmed 3 spoke rally style steering wheel.  Up high is a tan mohair headliner, nice, tight and just pristine!

Drivetrain
Opening the dual cowled hood, we are greeted with a Chevrolet 350ci small block engine.  This engine has been treated to a new a 4-barrel Holley carburetor, and has a new aluminum intake manifold.  Also noted are ribbed and polished Edelbrock valve covers and a mesh beehive air cleaner assembly.  On the back is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission with new tranny lines.  Way in the back is a 10 bolt rear axle with new bearings and spider gears.  Our consignor notes a new polished AC compressor has been put on along with a new condenser.   Also seen are a new distributor, radiator, water pump, belts, hoses as well as new plugs and wires. 

Undercarriage
Looking at a solid structural frame underneath, some new parts have been added in the form of a new fuel pump, fuel lines, power front disc brakes, and brake lines.  We note a  Mustang II independent front suspension and leaf springs and power drum brakes are on the rear and new stainless steel headers and mufflers are in charge of the exhale.  Very little surface rust is seen throughout and is looking all good underneath in this black environment.  A fine job in the build, obviously a labor of love.

Drive-Ability
This hot rod lives up to its name as it fired right up, sounded great, and took off with vigor to the test track.  Here it has nice smooth acceleration, smooth shifting, and good braking with the power front discs.  No rattles or squeaks, and all was functioning on the control front including the Vintage Air blowing nice and cold.  The seats are like your recliner at home, so beware of falling asleep while driving!

The car sounds great, and runs and shifts smoothly, and is comfortable to sit in to boot!  A turnkey Hot Rod with Harley Earl lines right out of 1937.  Not perfect on the exterior front, but ready to be enjoyed and driven today!
