1942 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1942 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

In the wake of the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the government decreed that to conserve scarce metals, cars built after January 1, 1942, were to use no brightwork apart from chrome-plated bumpers.  Grilles, belt moldings, and hubcaps were painted in contrasting colors, creating what became known as "blackout" models.

An early purchase from Classic Auto Mall in its infancy, now all fixed up with it being chopped, and lowered and now all the conveniences of a modern day car, even vintage air conditioning.

Exterior
With the former southern all steel body bathed in Jersey Yacht White paint, (impressive!), the top has been chopped 4.5", a sedan rear window has been installed, the vent windows removed, the hood pie cut 1.5", the windshield V-butted, and the suspension lowered.  Nice original lines of the fenders which dive downward  not the doors, no running board just a flared rocker, and a nearly totally inset rear fender.  A V style grille in white has wonderful straight horizontal ribs, and a white painted surround.  Single headlights reside on the front of the rounded quarters, which flank a bulbous hood in a V shape as hot moves to the front glass.  Shining brightly is a wide trim spear that begins on the hood and runs the length of the car at the beltline.  White painted rear view mirrors are hanging off of either side, and below on the flared rockers is a stainless steel trimming following the contours of the fenders and doors. 15 inch Billet Specialties polished wheels are wrapped in front 205/70R15's and in back 225/70R15's.  Nicely done, and looking a lot like a lead sled but much lighter!

Interior
Opening the doors reveals a totally new interior with molded sandstone tweed door panels with a custom armrest and billet cranks and actuators.  A smooth light tan vinyl is atop the armrest.  Inside late model sandstone tweed buckets that have power adjustments are in and between them is a shoebox style console/ armrest.  Upfront the dash has a wonderful chromed ribbed and round gauge cluster directly on center.  New black face gauges are now in and Vintage Air can be seen with its numerous billet controls and vents.  A nifty rally leather padded rimmed billet styled rally steering wheel fronts the dash.  A billet style shift lever is on the tilt column.  Medium pile carpeting covers the floors and is a darker beige with some dark brown speckles. The hump is covered in a fox fur hide which runs from under the dash to the back seat which is a tweed rear buckets.  Here its head resides between the seat, ( Now that's a first!).  A shout out to the headliner which is tweed wrapping a tight embossed pattern ceiling to add even more interest.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a fully restored engine bay, sits a 350ci V8 circa 1986 with all the hoses and wiring of a modern engine because it is!  It has been fitted with Comp Cams cam and lifters and is topped with an Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetor and has a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission with a shift kit throwing power to a 10 bolt rear axle.   All add ons wiring and hoses are like new.

Undercarriage
Since very slight patina and road dirt for the inner corners, but otherwise clean and rust free stamped steel floor pans and solid framing also in black.  A Mustang II front suspension is now on and leaf springs were left on the rear.  Power disc braking is upfront, and power drums for the rear and these are like new.  Sanderson headers and a Turbo muffler dual system is seen for the exhale.

Drive-Ability
An impressive driver with nice smooth power, shifting, and all the comfort add-on conveniences were working just great.  A nice driver which can also show, (Go and show!).

Taken from our halls in the infancy days of Classic Auto Mall, then reworked, modernized, and spit shined, it now displays a great example of the 1942 Master Deluxe in even more Deluxe form.  Turn the key and go show it or go for a cruise.
