1970 Dodge Dart Swinger Hardtop

1970 Dodge Dart Swinger Hardtop

Although many of the most well-known classic cars are full-size vehicles, American automakers have made some great compact cars as well.  The Dodge Dart is one prominent example of this fact.  This model, which was built on the Mopar A-Body platform from 1963 through 1976, offered a range of configurations from practical six-cylinder commuters to potent V8 muscle cars.  The Dart was totally refreshed for 1970 with front and rear design changes to bring the car closer to the design themes found in Dodge's full-size vehicles.  This was achieved through grill and contour changes and in the rear, the Dart's new rectangular tail lamps were set into a wedge-shaped rear bumper.  The Dart convertible was discontinued along with the optional 383ci big block, leaving the 340ci 4bbl as the top Dart engine.

For consignment, a restored and upgraded Burnt Orange Metallic painted Dodge Swinger that recently came out of a large Mopar collection, all presenting in very good condition.  Good enough to kick some ass at the late night drags with its rebuilt transmission, 380hp Mopar Performance crate engine, and rebuilt 3.55 SureGrip rear axle.  Looking racy and ready to burn out!

Exterior
A factory correct FK5 Burnt Orange Metallic paint respray covers rust free straight panels for this machine.  It is all looking factory from the grille to the glossy black dual hood scoops also adorning the hood.  This hood cozies up to the front glass, which is all surrounded by beautiful shiny stainless trim, as is all glass for this cabin, which does a phenomenal job of highlighting the black vinyl covered roof.  This vinyl shows with a textured grain finish and does have some bubbling underneath that could either be from rust or excess glue that was applied during the redux.  Badging is unique in its placement as it comes to a roost on the rear quarters just past the doors and a stainless trimmed black rub strip runs the mid beltline from stem to stern.  Moving around back are the new for 1970 segmented tail lights hovering within the large and in-charge wedge shaped chrome rear bumper.  All of this adds to the buttoned up look, and just below are dual exhaust tips peeking out from under the bumper with correct A-body polished tips.   A shout out to the curvature of the rear glass which also adds to the new for 1970 Swinger look.  14-inch Mopar Rallye wheels are on all 4 corners and are looking great with their polished trim rings and raised white letter BF Goodrich 205/70R14 radials.  A swinger with a stinger…read on!!

Interior
As we open the doors to slip inside, we shake hands with plenty of vertical tuck and roll insert panels among smooth black vinyl framing for the outside of the door panels.  A shiny door actuator is attached to a black armrest, along with a window crank and chromed mirror joystick.  Sleek high back buckets again with the mixture of tuck and roll and smooth black vinyl look nearly perfect as they flank the carpeted hump that is complete with a B&M ratchet shifter.  The metal inward V shaped dash is painted black with more black fields housing the temp sliders and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo is just below for the center here.  The instrument cluster has been updated with a black bezel holding a bevy of silver face AutoMeter gauges including a tachometer as well as some chrome knobs and pulls.  For the back bench, more tuck and roll black vinyl stretches across and these interior chairs are floating in a sea of clean black carpeting.  Above is a nice tight black headliner.  This car is just ripe with perfection.

Drivetrain
Underneath the hood in a fully restored and highly detailed Burnt Orange painted engine bay, is a nicely presenting but not original 360ci V8.  This is a Mopar Performance Magnum 380hp crate engine and there is a gleaming 4-barrel Holley carburetor atop a Mopar Performance aluminum intake manifold with both covered by an open element black topped Edelbrock air filter cover.  Ribbed black Mopar Magnum valve coverings are noted, and on the back is a fully rebuilt A727 3-speed automatic transmission.   For the rear end, a fully rebuilt 8 1/4" axle carries a 3.55 gear ratio combined with SureGrip to spin the rear tires. This potent engine and drivetrain combination will propel this car down the 1/4 mile in the mid 12 second range on a normal basis all the while ingesting pump gas.

Undercarriage
All looking good on the undercarriage front with solid floor pans and rockers,  We can note a small area of invasive rust on the one rear unibody rail near the exhaust hanger, but again it is small.  Independent torsion bar front suspension and leaf spring for the rear, along with disc brakes in front and drums for the back are on to provide the ride and the WHOAH factor.  Headers and a Flowmaster muffler system is in dual form and snaking its way rearward ending with correct chromed and polished tips.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth runner and great accelerator.  The interior is as comfy as it is flawless, and all functions were working perfectly save for the brake and reverse lights not illuminating when prompted.  Nice handling and quick stopping bias free braking was at hand for this test drive.

Overall a nice and tastefully hot rodded version of the 1970 Swinger.  Stunning Burnt Orange paint and a killer pump gas friendly drivetrain and we are in award winning low hanging fruit territory.  Check it out because if you wait around too long, you'll miss out on your chance to peel out.
