1986 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback

1986 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback

A Foxbody Mustang is a Mustang produced anywhere from 1979 to 1993. It doesn't matter if it's a coupe, convertible, or a hatch. It also doesn't matter what engine it has either, or transmission. As long as it's between the ages of 1979 and 1993, it's a Foxbody. I know, it's a really weird name to give to a car, but it's called a Foxbody because it's on the Ford Fox platform. Ford designed the Fox platform as a unibody chassis and used it across a wide range of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles. Ford's main objective with the Fox platform was to downsize the massive cars they made in the '70s.

Welcome to 1986, and this consignment in the form of a 52,830 title verified mile Foxbody Mustang GT hatchback. This 3 owner, single family owned, nearly all stock GT was purchased new by our consignor's wife's uncle, then it was passed to the wife's brother before coming to roost with our consignor. An original interior, the factory paint and good old reliable EFI on the legendary 5.0 and we have a winner among our midst. A few scuffs and touch ups, but otherwise very nice condition overall. Settle into the seats and breathe in 1986 all over again.

Exterior
A nicely presenting application of the factory installed Medium Canyon Red Metallic paint bathes the exterior of this car. A few chips that have been touched up are present throughout the body, but again, it's all original paint and metal here folks. Adorning the midline is a dark stripe of charcoal gray molding, and this runs around the car creating various coves and flares, as well as some embossed badging just north of the rockers. This is also noted on the hood with a knockout decal GT badge. Badging is correct and clean as is all the window trim and up high the car has been optioned with the removable glass T-tops for that open air driving experience without all the fuss and upkeep of a true convertible. A sweeping hatchback provides room for the large rear window complete with a defogger and sweeps down to the long running spoiler that would become standard fare on the 1987-93 Mustang LX. Rear quarter window louver trimmings accentuate the hatch line as well. Standard 15-inch 10 hole wheels are on all 4 corners wrapped in nearly new 225/60R15 rubber from the 37th week of 2022. Up front are dual rectangular headlights set deep within a black surrounding plastic bezel thus earning the nickname for the cars....the "four eye" and just below, deeply inset into the fascia are a pair of Marchal fog lamps with their factory installed covers.

Interior
All original and all shades of light and dark gray with black handles for the door panels. To spice up the gray, are front buckets and a rear 2 plus 2 bench. These have dark gray small checkered inserts and lighter broadcloth bolsters, and a red wide piping delineating the shades of gray. These float in a sea of clean gray carpeting. The dash is charcoal gray and original with slighter lighter charcoal inserts that have machine screws to mount these individual plates which house the instrumentation. In the center is a modern AM/FM/CD stereo, (the first deviation from stock), and just below this at the front of the console is a digital readout clock, and an overhead graphic showing fuel, washer fluid levels, and exterior lights which are not lit. Moving back is the shift lever with a black leather boot, and the handbrake lever, also in black within the gray stitched console sides. Not to be left out, the 2 spoke cruise control steering wheel, which is leatherette wrapped on the rim and is visually appealing. A quick glance upward gives us a view of the sky through the smoked glass T-roof sections, all framed by a fairly tight gray headliner.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is an original 5.0 Liter V8 which shows some slight patina but is clean. This is fed by EFI and has a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission on back. A Ford 8.8-inch rear with 3.08 rear TracLok axle setup is noted to push this car along. Machined cast aluminum valve coverings and no corrosion for all the bolt ons, as well as a natural finish upper intake plenum with a 5.0 Liter EFI badge on its top.

Undercarriage
Very slight surface rust is seen, but mostly structurally solid unibody construction with clear floor pans and rockers. Independent coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil spring rear suspension as well as power disc brakes on front and power drums on the rear are noted. Factory headers feed down to dual exhaust that snakes its way rearward and shows some slight rust on the Flowmaster mufflers, and this folks is the second deviation from stock.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and handled the test track with flying colors. A veritable trip back in time with the road of the 5.0 and shifting gears like a young Wally Dallenbach. A great handler, and tight car, so a 2 thumbs up goes to it with all functions working, including the icy cold AC....BRRRRRRR!

All very original here folks complete with its small battle scars, a known history, the original interior, and overall really nicely preserved survivor. And of course, engine power from the 5 liter that is sly as a Fox!
