1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built. Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired. That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body. Plus, when you factor in this ride's drivetrain, tastefully restored interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!

Purchased by our consignor, a classic car collector and driven sparingly over the last few years, this Malibu right out of 1965 has been treated to over $12,000 worth of repairs and paint work to keep it in tip top shape. Looking at this interesting version of the 1965 Chevrolet Malibu dressed as an SS I have shades of the Pacific Coast Highway, driving across the Bixby Bridge, heading to point Lobos to do some Ansel Adams-esque image capturing. Windows down, tickling the accelerator, headed north from Big Sur, does life get any better? I give you the inspiration for this memory the Chevy Malibu, right here on the east coast at Classic Auto Mall

Exterior
Paint code EE denotes Danube Blue paint, and this respray is much like the factory color. Paint is the deep end of the pool and was well applied with little to no inclusions and only a few imperfections. A nicely restored horizontal ribbed grille with Chevy badge in the center has dual headlights and a shiny bumper below. As we work our way rearward, good gaps and shiny brite work are noted throughout. This car is badged with the Chevrolet crossed flags and 327 designations, along with the Malibu SS badges on the rear quarters. 14-inch steel wheels with 3-point SS badged covers adorn the Chevrolet and all are wrapped with low mileage red stripe 195/75R14 rubber.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we greet 1960s styling with a blue horizontal ribbed center panel in vinyl between a lighter upper and darker lower smooth strip. This panel has the door actuators and window cranks as well as a blue vinyl covering in a shiny tray pull/armrest. Inside we see the two-tone blue vinyl low back bucket seats consisting of dark blue tuck and roll inserts and smooth light blue bolsters with some chrome trimmings on the sides and blue seat belts. A stylish chromed shift lever rises for the driver from the chromed and ribbed aluminum full length console. Blue carpeting surrounds the seats and console showing in very clean condition. In back is a blue vinyl bench with some armrests built into the sides matching the front buckets in design. An inverted V style aluminum dash drips of 60' bowtie styling, the original center gauge cluster, which is flanked by the speedo on wheel left, and a temp, oil, fuel and amp cluster to wheel right. A factory tachometer is in the center and is fronted by a wood rimmed wheel. Original pull knobs function perfectly, and an AM/FM/Cassette stereo fills the factory spot in the dash. A pair of aftermarket gauges hang under the dash and as I look around this clean, tight, blue interior, I'm dreaming about Michelle Phillip's cute little overbite belting out “Dedicated to the One I Love”.

Drivetrain
A big, bold, and beautiful 327ci orange/red blocked mill is resting nicely within the restored engine bay. The engine is period correct and could be the original based on the casting number and casting date, however an incorrect font and form vin stamping is present, and we do not have a protect-o-plate to fully verify this engine. It is topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and factory correct black painted air cleaner. Also, on back a Muncie M21 4-speed circa 1969 transmission that replaces the original transmission for just a bit more excitement. Putting power to the ground is a 12-bolt axle with an unknown gear ratio. All is very nicely done with painstaking attention taken under this hood and our consignor notes that the rear axle has recently been gone through and resealed, eliminating any leaks.

Undercarriage
Power disc brakes front and rear, power steering, and dual Flowmaster exhaust can take you down the road safely and loudly. You can be secure in the fact that there is a strong frame which is showing off as a rust free, patina riddled, factory undercoated environment.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and on the test track it performed nicely with great acceleration and smooth shifting. Nice and tight, and what fun to drive with all functions save for the reverse lights working

A good example of the '65 Malibu fully restored and very nice with just a few slight upgrades, straight steel and nice chrome and brightwork. The front bucket seats are very clean as is the overall interior. Engine is looking great and performs as such. I'm California Dreamin'.
