1971 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS454

1971 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS454

The storied Chevelle is one of those timeless designs that looks good no matter how it's built.  Stock, modified, race, pro-touring, whatever; the clean lines and balanced stance on these tough classics create a confident swagger that's universally admired.  That means, if you're looking to ride in style, you really can't go wrong with a Chevrolet A-Body.  And when you factor in this ride's small block drivetrain, tastefully redone interior and first rate, all-American sheet metal, you get the picturesque profile of an incredible muscle car!

For consignment, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS in 454 format, and from 1971.  This car has been the beneficiary of a built and dyno tested Gen VI 454ci V8 and worked over TH400 replacing the original Muncie.  It comes with its original build sheet and has been verified by the National Chevelle Association and has blingy 15-inch chrome wheels, a functional cowl induction hood, and is presented in screaming yellow and ready to kick ass!

Exterior
For 1971, the face-lifted Chevelle moved an impressive 387K units.  Not only did that high-profile success earn GM big money, it also solidified the nameplate as part of Chevy's oft romanticized 'golden era'.  At the front of this coupe, a split grille hangs a prominent “SS” emblem between stainless-trimmed headlights and a nicely chromed bumper.  Opposite that bumper, a domed Super Sport white striped cowl induction hood leads the eye to fresh glass that's seated in clean stainless frames.  The stripes pause for the top and pick up again on the slightly sloping trunk lid.  At the base of those glass frames, chrome door handles, a chrome driver's mirror and white-tinged “SS454” badges complement 5 spoke Cragar 15-inch wheels wrapped in staggered width blackwall BFG Radial T/A's.   And at the back of the car, a second chromed bumper hangs with a standard SS central inlay badge.  Round tail lighting is within the rear bumper.  Some of the lowers of this car show some rust repairs and active rust invasion, but nothing detrimental at this point.

Interior
Its correct combination of bench and bucket seats that are firm to the touch, encased in black vinyl, with original belts, and are high back form, (AKA as Strato buckets), grace this well done inside.  In front of those seats, a straight Super Sport dash frames the factory gauges, clean and pristine, providing all the telemetry you'll need for those hot laps along with a tachometer strapped to the steering column.  Below that dash, black carpet floats a black plastic console housing the aircraft style horseshoe shifter with a black and silver inlay.  At the sides of that carpet, door panels center classy stainless trim and requisite “SS” emblems are on with bright handles and supple, comfortable armrests.  In front of the driver the SS badged 4 spoke steering wheel atop a black column and behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk is finished with a correct jack and full-size spare tire.  The headliner is nice and tight and is also black, and where the shoulder belts hang.

Drivetrain
Gaze into the satin black engine bay we're bowled over by the presentation of the Gen VI 454ci V8 mill.  Helping the mill make its dyno proven 410.29 horsepower is a Crane hydraulic roller cam and ported and port matched to the intake cast iron rectangle port heads with 2.25 intake valves and Jesel shaft mounted rockers.  On top is a Quickfuel 850cfm double pumper 4-barrel carburetor atop the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake manifold.  On the back is a TCI Super Street Fighter TH400 3-speed automatic tranny with a 10" XHD 2900-3200rpm stall converter with anti-balloon plates  The rear axle weighs in at a circa 1969 12 bolt unit with 4.11 Positraction gears with 30 spline axles.  Polished valve coverings, Pypes exhaust and headers are now on this nice supple hose and high power ignition wired mill.

Undercarriage
Well cared for showing aging gracefully would be the buzzword for the undercarriage, with clean suspension, surface rust free floor pans with some leftover undercoating, and straight rust free rockers.  Independent coil springs and 4 link with coil springs are on for the suspension front and rear, and power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the rear.

Drive-Ability
Our muscle car aficionado snapped up this test drive, and when he returned he just had a smile on his face and 2 thumbs up, so it must have been good!  He reported nice acceleration, smooth shifting, good cornering and all the positive essentials were working swimmingly.  Overall it was very happy motoring.

A very nice example, ready to go and show with a simple turn of a key.  No wrenching, no bodywork, (at least immediate), no fuss no muss, just pure real deal SS excitement and enjoyment all while looking just fab with a killer dyno proven powertrain.  An SS if there ever was one!
