1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Yes, it's a Ford, but a galloping, wild horse is a way cooler badge than a blue oval with the word "Ford" written in it. A lot of thought went into that badge, too. Did you know that it's intentionally oriented so that it is running against the direction of tamed race horses? You know why the side of a Mustang always looks like the side of a Mustang? It's because of the hockey stick-shaped line that runs low down the side and then makes a sharp turn upwards just before it hits the rear wheel. The Mustang doesn't just feature a solid grille and headlight unit, the headlights are slightly recessed, external from the grille, and often set at an angle, sloping towards the rear of the car. This serves to highlight the overbite, and make the car look more like it's cutting through the air... angrily.

For consignment, a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 Sportsroof in a special order paint color of Royal Maroon with black accenting.  It's a R-code car folks, so it has the 428ci Cobra Jet mill with Ram Air, comes with its Deluxe Marti report and window sticker and has a 4-speed on the floor.  It is presenting in fair to good condition, and our consignor states that it's an older restoration but still a good driver.  It is a 3 owner car that originated in Lancaster Pa, with its first owner being Amish, (actually that's not true, I just got wrapped up in all the horses this car has!!).

Exterior
Nicely sculpted steel with distinct Mustang features which carry over from the original design, like sunken single headlights, an oval grille and the triple tail lighting on either side of the rear all look like they have been put on steroids.  The hockey stick cove is not on this car, instead it has a sharply creased belt line breaking up the rounded sides and ribbed rocker moldings with Mach 1 call outs at the base of each front fender.  Resting between the front fenders is a blacked out hood with requisite shaker assembly poking its head out and of course a black spoiler is on the trunk deck this goes well with the respray of Royal Maroon, a special order paint color, and tinted glass framed with shiny stainless trimmings is seen throughout.  We note a few inclusions in the paint, severe chipping of the black on the hood pin equipped hood, some blistering of the paint and a few areas where surface rust is rearing its head, we can safely store this one in the "20 footer" category.  The gaps remain fairly well minded with the exception of the driver's door, which is in dire need of new hinges and pins.  In front, a black chin spoiler is on and there is no galloping horse in the grille just floating marker lamps within gunsights that my crack decoder has informed me should be clean and not amber.  14-inch chrome Magnum 500 wheels, nice and shiny,  are wrapped in BF Goodrich TA rubber 215/70R14's in front, and 245/60R14's on back.  Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

Interior
Very nice and smooth black vinyl with carpeted lowers covers the door panels.  Shiny actuators inset into the panel and a shiny window crank along with a comfy armrest are mounted within the smooth panels and lest we forget the walnut applique dressing up the center of each panel.  Inside, high back bucket seats with black knitted vinyl tuck and roll inserts and black smooth bolsters and headrests are the chairs in front.  Some seam separate and along with a major tear and missing foam is noted on the driver's outer bolster.  A center console is between these buckets and sports a glovebox and houses the Hurst shifter along with a duo of aftermarket gauges.  The factory rim blow steering wheel fronts the original dash which is a series of deep set round gauges lined up under a squared off eyebrow dash top.  In the center is a factory AM/FM radio, and the climate control sliders.  In front of the passenger is another high squared off eyebrow that has the clock, Mach 1 badge and a glove box below.  A very sporty and reminiscent of an aircraft interior.  Noted in back is an added fold down 2+2 rear seat under the sloping roof, and it is surrounded by plastic molded armrests and some storage bins.  Black carpeting in on the floors, and vinyl black headliner is nice and tight above.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, is a beautifully restored 428ci Cobra Jet V8 circa 1966.  The block, heads and intake are bathed in a fresh coating of Ford Blue and a single 4-barrel carb is on top under the Shaker hood equipped air cleaner.  On back is a correct Toploader 4-speed manual tranny which pushes power rearward to a Ford 9 inch 3.50 conventional gear rear axle via a new Centerforce clutch.  All looking very well kept in its blue block, silver valve covering and correct exhaust manifold form.  

Undercarriage
Underneath we are greeted with a mix of black undercoating and surface rust for the unibody, flooring and rockers.  We note floor pan repairs have been performed in the past, however, invasive rust is making an appearance on both front torque boxes as well as the passenger's right front unibody rail.  This will need remedied before long and continuing along those lines we note some invasive rust on the heel/toe boards of the flooring and some beginning to take hold on the shock towers as well.  Like new reproduction exhaust is on in dual format for effective and efficient spent fossil removal and for the stopping we have power brakes with discs up front and drums in the rear.  Keeping this pony surefooted is an independent coil sprung front suspension and leaf springs out back.

Drive-Ability
This was an awesome car to drive with unlimited power, great handling, and smooth operation overall.  It can go in a straight line fast, and corner with the best of them from its era.  All was in good sound mechanical condition save for the front turn signals that didn't flash and the aforementioned driver's door hinges.

One of the baddest of the bad boys when it comes to 1970 Mustangs.  A cared for and loved example of the Mustang Sportsroof/Fastback, but not without its faults and flaws.  All era correct and begging to be taken to the next level.  I'm almost shaking with anticipation for the next owner every time I stare down that menacing Shaker scoop...so much so that I may have soiled myself.
