1931 Chevrolet Independence Huxster

1931 Chevrolet Independence Huxster

From the late 1920s and into the mid-1930s, Chevrolet's practice was to assign one-year-only model names to its cars each year, with “Independence” getting the nod in 1931, officially Series AE.  The name Huxster means to sell small items and these trucks are typically seen loaded on back with produce or other goods which were sold directly from the  back of the truck.  Some items were of questionable value, hence the negative connotation with regards to this word.

For consignment, a barn find 1931 Chevrolet Independence Huxster.  This example has a steel body and a wood bed with a
covering.  It will need some TLC as to a restoration but in the end the new owner will have a unique example of this model.

Exterior
Running boards connected with rounded fenders and steel artillery wheels are the theme for this model.  A steel cowled hood hinged in the center is the norm for her.  In front a black painted radiator surround flanked by a single round headlight on either side is seen.  Below is a dual bar bumper which is surface rusted.  For the cab, hinged doors have been removed but are in the rear bed.  These are steel with wood framing inside and have square window openings.  In the back side portion of the cab is a half round glass window in a vertical panel.  These panels are hinged as well.  From the bed section of the truck to the back it's all wood construction for the sides, bed and roof framing.  There is a back door for the bed and it is a solid top version.  The wood is intact and not rotted, although the roof sags just a bit.  19-inch steel enclosed artillery wheels are wrapped by 4.75/5.00-19 tires all remaining inflated.  The entire truck is painted black and the paint is very faded and shows lots of patina, but no real rust problems.

Interior
A simple cab is in front directly behind the long cowled hood and in front of the bed.  It has dual low back buckets seats which are mounted on a wood bench together.  These are covered in red vinyl in fair condition.  The all steel dash has an instrument cluster in the center with in a curved inset stamped steel panel.  Instruments are faded and glass has some mold and mildew within the gauges.  The floors are steel and some rubber matting is seen in front of the seats.  A large faded bakelite steering wheel is fronting the dash and reaching for the driver, as is the shift lever and handbrake on the floor.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 194ci inline 6 cylinder which is fed by a 1-barrel carburetor.  A 3-speed manual transmission is on back with a 3.82 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust, but the framing remains strong.  Leaf spring suspension and mechanical drum braking is noted all 4 corners with surface rust.

An interesting 1 year example of the Independence Huxster truck.  Load it and start selling!
