During the mid 1920's Ford realized their competitors had caught on to the idea of assembly line mass production and had to move forward from the Model T design. This was especially true by offering more powerful engines, new convenience features, or cosmetic options. Also, features Henry Ford considered to be unnecessary, such as electric starters were gradually shifting in the public's perception from luxuries to essentials. Ford realized his new design had to move some of his manufacturing theories from Design for Manufacturing, to Flexible Mass Production, and what would be the successful run of the model A began.
