1975 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible

1975 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible

The Caprice name was coined by Bob Lund, (Chevrolet's General Sales Manager), after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City. Others say the car was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and influential Indy-car official James P. Chapman.

For consignment, gracing our halls here at Classic Auto Mall we have a 1975 Caprice Convertible. Dressed in dark green with a nice tan convertible top, a rebuilt engine with a mere 6000 miles on it, loaded with power options such as power windows, power locks, AC, plus more, and the final year for the convertible option. Lots of paperwork is included with the purchase such as the original window sticker, dealership brochure and original bill of sale.

Exterior
A tan canvas convertible top with a glass rear window covers the top and presents with minor staining and soiling but no tears. With the push of a switch the top moves up and down with ease. Dark Green Metallic body panels being a respray of the original color presents well with only minor inclusions and chips. A revised for 1975 grille is topped by a long flat hood and shows with very nice chrome trimmings. This grille is flanked on both sides by dual slightly swept back headlights and below a shiny chrome bumper follows suit with the ends also sweeping toward the rear. The long trunk culminates at the back with triple taillights, and dual chrome tipped exhaust sticking out below. Wire wheel covers in very nice shape cover wheel on all 4 corners.

Interior
Dark Saddle with stitched vinyl uppers and plastic lowers and just a hint of wood appliqué for the door panels. These house the power lock switches, power windows, and a remote toggle for the driver's side mirror. Turning our attention to the passenger area we see dual rarely seen Dark Saddle sport cloth bench seats, a split version upfront and a full rear bench floating in a sea of slightly stained gold carpeting in good condition. The driver's lower cushion has a significant tear and is exposing the foam padding below. A saddle dash fronts the passengers and shows clean saddle padded vinyl and some more wood appliqué panels. Gauges and warning lights are all clean and working. An AutoGauge tachometer has been added to the column to monitor rpm's. The factory AM/FM stereo is in its correct location and below the dash in a consolette we see a Sony AM/FM/CD player and a trio of Stewart Warner gauges.

Drivetrain
A 454ci V8, which has the correct build time and stamping code to be original to the car but due to no vin stamping on the block so we cannot confirm numbers matching, sits in the cavernous engine bay. The engine was rebuilt in the late 1990's and has logged approximately 6,000 miles. It has a single 4-barrel carburetor on top and aluminum intake manifold along with chrome valve covers and air cleaner assembly. A number matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is behind the engine. Also noted is a 10-bolt 2.73 Positraction rear axle.

Undercarriage
Overall nice with undercoating and just slight areas of minor surface rust, but we do note a previous repair at the front of the drivers floor pan and a small spot of invasive rust on the passengers front pan. All else is looking just great and we see headers and dual Flowmaster exhaust. We see independent coil springs upfront, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear. Overall nice and clean underneath.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and took right off when we flipped into the D position. It shifted smoothly and the 4-barrel gives it a kick even though this car is big. The exhaust note was very akin to a muscle car thanks to the headers and Flowmasters. Steering was smooth, and it is a nice cruiser with all options functioning well during our drive.

There is something about a full-sized drop top car that presents nicely, it just looks like additional class. The Dark Saddle accenting, wire wheel covers, and power top don't hurt the image either. This car is a turnkey and have fun car, as it is ready to go. A few faults, but certainly nothing to make it a game changer. So, stop in and indulge yourself while still being sensible!
