1989 Chevrolet Caprice

1989 Chevrolet Caprice

Who among us hard core car guys and gals cannot for the life of us stop lifting off the accelerator when we see a Chevrolet Caprice alongside the road sitting there not moving? It's inbred that this is the car nearly every police force utilized for years and years. One suspects radar or timing strips or any number of nefarious ways to nab a speeder. For this writer who enjoys a quick commute even to the grocery store, I need to be diligent at every turn so as not to be nabbed by the “fuzz” watching ever so diligently from the interior of their Police Caprice, GM's fleet car star.

For consignment, a “survivor” if you will in 1989 Chevrolet Caprice getup. This is a 1 owner used car and enjoyed as necessary all the time with the intention not to be that as a collector car, but normal transportation. Nicely convenience optioned, this box design from '89 gracing the halls of the Classic Auto Mall, and when I speed by on the golf cart, I'm still tempted to step on the brake to avoid that ticket, which I will get not for speeding, but the golf carts have no way to “click it!”

Exterior
With large straight steel side slab panels, 4 big doors and a long trunk and hood, gaps are decently minded, and moldings are also well aligned. All bathed in light blue, the neoprene bumper fillers on front and rear remain intact, but the lower sections of the body are showing signs of both surface and invasive rust. This rust has also started making appearances on the undersides of all 4 doors. Square and rectangle design abounds on the rectangular headlights, grille, turn signals within the clean front bumper, and side marker lighting. A wide stainless rocker molding runs the length of this car and both wheel arch molding and lower beltline rub moldings add some highlights. Body matching side view mirrors are attached to the front doors on either side, and the long trunk lid as well as the hood show nicely. On the back more rectangular designs within straight panels for the taillights and another pristine bumper below. Even the badge font is squared off. Wire wheel covers are on all 4 corners…classy and sassy.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see padded dark blue vinyl uppers and some smooth dark blue vinyl broken up by the vinyl door pulls. A hint of some chrome for the cranks and actuators sets off these high end trimmed swingers. Inside, more crushed dark blue velour broadcloth in big bucket form with tuck and rolling, and some velour piping, and plenty of width. A nice padded armrest flops down for extra comfort or can stay up and provide another middle seat. In back is an equally comfortable rear bench, same padding and design as the front, all clean and comfy. Heavily soiled blue carpet and mats flood the floors and in front floating above is the original dash showing the factory heat and AC slides and AM/FM/Cassette stereo all within a nice applique band. The headliner above is nice and tight and we note a working dome light that is missing its lens.

Drivetrain
Within the original but patinaed, dusty and surface rusted engine bay, is perched a 5.0 Liter V8 that is correct for the car. This mill has electronic fuel injection, and a 200R4 4 speed automatic transmission on back. The rear 10 bolt axle has 2.73 gears. All good under the hood.

Undercarriage
Nice patina on all surfaces that mixes with an appropriate dosage of surface rust. Overall a solid as a rock frame, floor pans and even wheel wells provide the backbone for this skate. Front power disc brakes are seen, as well as power drum brakes for the back. Amazingly clean and green environment under here!

Drive-Ability
Normally I would not pay attention to driving one of these, but this one called for me with its unmolested condition. I answered and slipped in, fired it up and was duly impressed. Good performance, decent handling, and a smooth ride. Bias free braking, and it all worked together for a trouble free ride.

Never thought of as a "collector car" by the original owner. Just a decently cared for example that presents honestly. It would not be most people's first choice, but in the end not many of these survive as most were fleet cars used until they dropped. Come in and see it in person and you too will be impressed, and if you sit it along the side of the road, I'll be sure to “lift” as I sweep by!
