1975 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible

1975 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible

There are differing accounts of the origin of the Caprice name. One states that it was coined by Bob Lund, Chevrolet's General Sales Manager, after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City. Another says the car was named after Caprice Chapman, the daughter of auto executive James P. Chapman.

For consignment, oft considered the nicest example of a Caprice model in that of the 1975 Caprice Convertible. This example is rust free, has beautiful paint, a clean interior, is equipped with the small block V8 (350ci) with a 2-barrel carburetor, and the best part is it is a convertible! Put your hat and bandanna on and let's go for a classic cruise down main street in some big Detroit Iron.

Exterior
A new front end with swept-back headlights, revised grille, and turn signals returned to the bumper which also angles backward at both ends is seen on this new design for 1975. All straight rust-free steel panels minding their gaps very nicely and bathed in miles deep red. Wheel well surrounds and a rocker trimming in stainless adds a nice highlight, as does the white trim spear which starts near the end of each front quarter panel and runs to the back of the car. On back, new taillights now wrap around rear fenders with a large shiny chromed bumper below. The white canvas top is in good condition and when in the down position, has a red tonneau cover just to spice things up a bit. Just about 8,350 Caprice Classic convertibles found buyers in 1975. On all 4 corners are gold badged bowtie logos with flat dish styling, slotting on the edges and wrapped in thin whites. All window surrounds, handles, and mirrors are in very nice condition with no pitting or signs of any aging.

Interior
A swing of the door and we are now in a world of Medium Sandstone vinyl, molded and stretched material work together to cover the door panels, which have power window toggles, and a side view mirror joystick. Inside 2 large benches stretch from door to door and are covered in Sandstone vinyl. Just slight spoiling throughout, but no rips or tears. A split back for the front, and a full bench in the back, both floating on their own gold carpeting, which is very clean. More Sandstone molded vinyl for the standard GM dash. There is a hint of wood appliqué on the lower insert of this dash where the temp sliders and radio are located. The original steering wheel is fronting this clean dash, and above is…the sky! when the top is down. A shout out to the trunk where a new piece of felt lining and the spare are residing…all rust free as well.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a very clean and restored engine bay is an orange/red painted GM 350ci block V8 L65. There is a 2-barrel carburetor on top, and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission on back. This pushes power to a 10-bolt 3.08 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Some light surface rust is noted, but unremarkable as this car is structurally sound, and has a mostly black patina covering to the undercarriage. Independent coil springs and a 4 link with coil springs are on for the ride, and power disc brakes are on front, and power discs for the rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and I was off to the test track. She runs just great, with smooth acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and smooth shifting. All functions were working during my test drive. I did notice the A/C has been removed, and on the top the pivot bow is coming loose from its stitched retainer.

A very nice example, restored, repainted and reworked in the engine department, and now a fine rust free fully operational version of the 1975 Caprice in convertible form.
