2021 DFKC Goblin

2021 DFKC Goblin

There are very few Open-Wheel Street Legal cars out there which can get you closer to the adrenaline-pumping experiences of F1 race cars. Unfortunately, most of them are too pricey to be grasped upon, but that's where the Goblin Kit Car from DF Kit Car based in Texas comes in. This is the solution for those aspiring drivers who are all in for an open cockpit race car experience but don't have the Benjamins to buy fully-fledged ones like the Ariel Atom 4 that is priced from $74,750 which frankly isn't everyone's cup of tea. This humble Goblin, even in its fully jacked-up configuration will not cost you even half the asking price of a base Ariel Atom. But in spite of that, the fun quotient of both these machines is at par and that is what makes the Goblin Kit Car a real standout. The catch, you ask?! Well, it all comes down to the heart and quality and fit and finish of materials. You won't be seeing clean smooth welds and usage of premium materials in the Goblin. And, unlike the Atom 4 that uses the same engine as the finely evolved Honda Civic Type-R, this Texas-bred uses cheeky power plants from the Chevy Cobalt. Thx To Hotcars.com

Here at Classic Auto Mall we have a saying, "we never know what's gonna come through the doors next", and we really mean it. Imagine my surprise when on a brisk and sunny December morning this F1-esque racer rolled off the trailer and into our Hallowed Halls. More roll cage than actual body, a rear mounted rebuilt 2.0 liter LSJ Ecotec supercharged 4 cylinder courtesy of a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS, QA1 coilovers and sporting #341 for its chassis number this is a pocket rocket if there ever was one. Let's delve into this go-kart on steroids...oh and you may want to bucket up, it's going to be a fast ride.

Exterior
A red steel roll cage in the form of a sub body provides the backing for the mix of black fiberglass and aluminum paneling for this ultra lightweight and simplistic skate. The lower sides paneling with "501" decals float below the side cage bars and up front, a narrowing fiberglass hood comes to an almost point, similar to Indy cars of the mid-late 1960's. The headlights, like bug eyes, protrude upwards from the exposed front suspension right next to the hood. The lightweight windshield is raked rearward ever so slightly and follows the body contours where it meets the hood. The upper body is finished in red and is simply a roll cage to surround the 2 passengers. The rear of this body is more caging with the suspension, engine and transmission exposed. A curving exhaust and large tail pipe occupy the rear of the car as well and just above a pair of twin LED tail lights grace either side. Black 17-inch Enkei wheels in 5 spoke format and are shod in 255/40ZR17 rubber from the 37th week of 2021. All the hints of a vintage Indy racer are here and at a mere 1,500lbs this thing is ready to scream!

Interior
With no top or doors we get a birds eye view of the basic racy interior. Black vinyl with red stitching makes up the seats with high back racing style buckets in the front. They have been fitted with G-Force 5-point safety harnesses and are ergonomically perfect to hold your body in place as you carve the corners. A red roll bar and side caging is extra security just in case the tires fail to maintain grip, you are protected (somewhat!). Black aluminum flooring is highlighted by the round and square tube chassis/roll cage and just in front of the seats is the remote located shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission. A centrally located dash cluster holds the speedometer and tach and is flanked by toggles and switches throughout the panel, we also note the addition of a boost gauge just in front of the rally style 3 spoke steering wheel. Definitely an open-air driving experience.

Drivetrain
A recently rebuilt Chevrolet Cobalt SS 2.0 liter Ecotec supercharged 4 cylinder rear engine is firmly planted in the back and is capable of making a consignor stated 250hp. This mill is fed by EFI and has a 5-speed manual transmission, also courtesy of a Cobalt SS, with a new clutch bolted to the back with a 3.84 final drive turning the tires.

Undercarriage
A large aluminum pan protects virtually the entire underside of this racer, just as it would on any Indy or F1 car. Fully exposed independent front suspension is seen with QA-1 coilovers and in the rear we see more exposed suspension in independent format, also with QA-1 coil overs. Disc brakes are seen all around and for the mighty exhale we note a header and single Flowmaster muffler.

Drive-Ability
Pure fun, open air, and you can almost become 1 with this interesting build. Insanely fast acceleration, great braking, and then the engine runs like a tip top, …top!
