1987 Porsche 944

1987 Porsche 944

In model year 1982, a fourth Porsche model line came onto the market. The 944 bridged the price and performance gap between the 924 and the 911 SC. Although the body of the 944 was based on the 924, it had considerably more striking contours. The 944 also featured a 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder engine developed by Porsche. Unlike the 924, the 944 was viewed as a "true" Porsche in the eyes of customers. A transaxle model was also produced by Audi in Neckarsulm.

For consignment, the front engine version venture of for Porsche, a 944. This car is sporting mostly original paint and 1 family owned since new, our consignor purchased this Porsche from his father when the odometer read a mere 17,000 miles. Always garage kept and well maintained, our consignor wouldn't hesitate to drive this German sports car cross country. Due to an unfortunate accident and our consignor now having the need for an automatic transmission equipped vehicle, we proudly offer to you this well-kept 1987 Porsche 944.

Exterior
Blue but not quite silver, Diamond Blue, which is a pearlescent extra charge color, accentuates the sculpted muscular lines of the 944. All surfaces are deep and shiny, and the paint is mostly original. The silver/blue covers most surfaces of this car and sports some black accenting for the rubber bumper guards, window trimmings and rear spoiler. On the back, a taillight conversion was done for a much cleaner sleeker look. Gaps are well minded, and updated Porsche 17-inch Boxster S Twist wheels, looking similar to the factory 16 inchers with a slight polish are on all 4 corners wrapped in BF Goodrich G-Force rubber.

Interior
Burgundy leather greets us on the door panels and is accentuated with a black molded plastic for the power windows and mirror and a carpeted (maroon) lower which shows some peel off and wear. Nice high back buckets are in front, and show with integrated headrests, tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters with power controls for the seats. In back some tight but comfortable 2 plus 2 buckets which form a bench stretches across to the B pillars. While presenting well, the seats do show typical age wear and a repair on the driver's lower cushion. An integrated armrest and headrest in the rear melts into a center console at the carpeted hump, which races forward to the dash. This presents in burgundy and black and houses the wood knob topped Kokeln shifter, AM/FM/Cassette player and more rocker switches. Fronting the rounded design original dash is a Williams wood steering wheel and looking on a black panel houses all the essential gauges and ventilation controls. Burgundy carpeting is on all floors and also covers the storage compartment under the hatch. Some wear is noted on the hatch carpet but is typical for the age.
Drivetrain
Under the hood a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder power plant is tucked inside a clean engine bay. This is fed by EFI and has a 5-speed manual transmission that has had the factory rubber center clutch replaced with a steel center unit. A 3.889 ratio rear axle spins the rear tires effectively and efficiently. All is looking sporty under this front engined 944. Of note, our consignor states that the timing belt was replaced approximately 40,000 miles ago and a round throttle pulley was put on for faster throttle response.

Undercarriage
Showing in patina, and slight surface rust, the construction remains solid with just some road dirt accumulation from over the miles. Mostly simple designed aero ground effects panels we can note independent coil springs upfront, and independent diagonal arm one torsion bar per side rear suspension. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners. Our consignor states that the front brake pads will need to be replaced but the car can still be safely driven.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good driver with a comfortable RPM cruise, some snappy acceleration, and smooth shifting. Braking was bias free on the panic stop test and I'm in love with the wood wheel. All functions were working properly at the time of our drive.

Porschephiles may rarely have seen this color, but here it is in living color on our showroom floors here at Classic Auto Mall. Nice original condition, smooth driver and sporty runner. A well maintained 2-owner sports car from the land of bier and schnitzel waiting to put a smile on your face.
