1948 GMC Pickup

1948 GMC Pickup

When comparing same size Chevy and GMC frames of the same year, most people are unaware that the GMC frame is longer than the Chevy frames. This is to accommodate the longer motor. Remember that GMC engines were truck engines and not car engines adapted to trucks. Full pressure oiling and inset bearings from 1939 make a GMC a truck. 1947 and 1948 GMC 's light duty trucks used a completely different inner fender setup and grille structure. Similar to the big truck construction, they used a prop rod to support the grille assembly and then a rubber diaphragm gasket through the front of the inner fender to seal the opening. These grilles also have 3 bars.

For consignment, a nicely restored GMC pickup, with a neutral but beautiful 2 tone paint job, straight panels, straight bed, and 5 windows.

Exterior
With a gray cab, hood and bed sides, and contrasting black fenders, running boards and large headlights, fronted by a fascinating chromed horizontal 3 bar integrated grille, this truck drips with late 1940's design. In 5 window form, plenty of clear vision is had when driving. Chrome and trim is all beautiful and almost better than new from the factory. Matching body color gray wheels are adorned with red GMC Logo moon style polished chrome hubcaps, and thin tire radials. A newly installed white oak wood bed is noted and none of it has a mark on it.

Interior
Ribbed gun metal gray sprays the lower metal door panels, and dash. Upper panels are cloth and in tan, and they match the seat. The gray metal dash houses 2 round gauge clusters which is fronted by the steering wheel. A few chromed metal knobs are seen within the dash, which has an aftermarket AM Radio/Cassette unit neatly mounted in the original trimmings on the dash. Below this is a horizontal ribbed speaker housing which connects to the ashtray, and glovebox. A buttoned and vertically tufted bench seat has gray piping on the edges and stretches from door to door. A vinyl headliner, and sprayed gun metal gray panels make up the interior roof of the cab. Black carpet covers the floors, where we can also see the long gear shift lever reaching towards the headliner. Note of a heater on the passenger side.

Drivetrain
Upon opening the long bulbous hood, we are met with a 228ci inline 6-cylinder engine, which may have gone through an earlier restoration. This is topped by a 1-barrel carburetor, and an oil bath air cleaner. A 4-speed manual transmission is attached to the rear of the I6. The engine runs very well and this truck is nice to drive.

Undercarriage
A look at the underside of this truck on our lift, we note a solid rust-free restored frame, painted black, floorpans and toe kicks in good condition, and hanging side running boards that are solid. Slight areas of mild surface rust and lots of patina are seen as well.

A vintage beautifully designed pickup, in nicely painted 2 tone exterior and interior condition. In true GMC truck form, a larger frame, and bigger engine than the Chevy, you'll be able to take a load of hay to the market or go out on the town with the Mrs. ready for “Pickup” here at Classic Auto Mall.
