1971 Volkswagen Beetle

1971 Volkswagen Beetle

Is there really any other car that's captured the world's heart the way the Beetle has? Especially coming from such hard and tyrannical times. What started off as a brainchild of a dictator, only 2 decades later became the juxtaposed icon of the peace movement. The Beetle really is a fantastic car for everyone, from the learners to the elderly, it's so easy to maintain and great to drive. There really is so much more to find out when it comes to the Beetle and keep an eye out for them, from the original to the latest bug-eyed beauty, you really never know where one will pop up.

As often as it's been said at Classic Auto Mall one of the exciting things is one never knows what is coming through the door next, and guess what popped up a few days ago?...this 1971 version, which runs great, shifts smoothly, and is in good overall condition.

Exterior
With a red respray covering the exterior, it shows in rust free condition. Several areas of the chrome trim has rust, and some pitting, in particular the headlight bezels, fender turn signal trim, and front fog lights, which appear to be aftermarket, and the wing window trimmings. Glass is clear, and wide white sidewall tires have a Porsche monikered moon style hubcap on all 4 corners. Tires are all but new still showing their mold spikes.

Interior
A restored and upgraded possibly with more padding, we note nicely done, 2 tone buckets in parchment and white vinyl with piping, are up front, and a rear bench sports the very same pattern. The seats seem to have more padding added to them during the redux and are more comfortable than the seats of the era. Interesting spun aluminum billet style items are noted such as the door lock buttons, and the gear shift lever. Tan carpeting covers the floor, and is stain free, as well as a tight parchment colored headliner presenting in good original condition. A metal simple dash has some woodgrain inserted and houses the round speedometer (not in working condition) in the middle of the driver's side. An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette player, which we could not get to work, is inserted.

Drivetrain
The 1600cc dual port engine starts quickly and is mechanically sound. Sporting the iconic VW “tinny” sound, this one actually has a deeper growl, with an aftermarket exhaust system. A 4-speed manual transmission works in conjunction with the engine, and shifts smoothly.

Undercarriage
Showing some surface rust and nice patina it is in good condition and shows like a 1971 version would.

Let's face it, all VW Beetles are meant to be fun, and this one was a blast to drive, and the interior was mysteriously more comfortable than the typical VW of this era. I suspect something was added, but it remains unknown, but I'll go with it! A nice used car, certainly not perfect, but a good driver car, with the iconic sound only a deeper one.
