1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

In 1940, Chevrolet released an expanded line. The Master 85 was joined by the Master Deluxe, with the Master Deluxe being the fancier, more expensive model. All 1940 models, while similar in style to the 1939s, had received enough of a facelift to give them a more modern, streamlined appearance”. The Master Deluxe would also be offered in a top-of-the-line convertible called the Special Deluxe series. Both the Master 85 and Master Deluxe lines were offered in a business coupe, two-door town sedan or four-door sport sedan. The 85 line also included a Woodie Wagon, and the Deluxe line, a Sport Coupe. The Master 85 retained the solid front axle, with the Deluxe series coming with “knee-action” independent front suspensions. The standard engine was the 216.5-CID in-line 6, which provided 85 horsepower. Perhaps the wording in a 1940 magazine advertisement summarizes the 1940 Chevrolet best: “The Crown of Beauty Belongs to Chevrolet with New Royal Clipper Styling. Chevrolet's First again! Eye it . . . Try it . . . Buy it!”

For consignment a 1940 Master Deluxe, which at first glance looks like a mild-mannered typical Master 85 with some sporty wheels. Upon closer inspection though, this car contains a well-honed engine that produces a whopping consigner stated 425HP! Not to be missed is the custom interior complete with glossy wood veneer dash, and overhead custom-built console.

Exterior
Mostly true to its original design, we see straight steel panels, honed to their final curvaceous form, with fat fenders, running boards, and rounded roofline, and curved trunkline. The hood comes to a shiny point with the chromed horizontal lined front grille clip and is framed with a nice condition simple curved bumper and framed on either side by large bullet style headlights that sit proudly on the front fenders. Noted are 3 corresponding pinstripes, which run from front to back along the belt line of this exterior. Polished Billet specialties custom wheels adorn each corner.

Interior
Swing open the doors and we are met with “terrycloth” like covered door panels, which have power window switches, and a pleated storage pouch. All this in red, including the slightly faded front cloth buckets, and a custom rear bench which has plenty of tufting and buttons giving a cloud like (all be it red) appearance. Up front we see a custom dash which is made up of a shiny wood veneer with deep red metal surrounds. Embedded within the veneer are VDO gauges, transmission selection lights, and a clock. Up above we note another wood veneer overhead console that houses a multi disc CD “shuttle”/AM/FM radio, and downlighting for the front and rear passengers. The headliner has the same “terrycloth” coverage as the door panels in... RED!

Drivetrain
This is the price of admission folks, with a 350ci Chevy Stroker small block, bored to 383Ci. The block has been magnafluxed and pressure tested, cooked, cleaned and bored to .030 and honed with torque plate. It has performance teflon coated cam bearings, and brass freeze plugs, and has been decked .010. It has a Stroker crank, Scat I beam rods, SRP forged pistons, a Pioneer heavy duty balancer, and select fit Clevite 77 main and rod bearings. The entire assembly has been blueprinted and balanced to high performance specs. That my friends, is how to get 425hp out of a 350 small block! A single 4-barrel carburetor, and a 3-speed automatic works in conjunction with the powerful mill to spin the tires.

Undercarriage
Cleaned and painted during the restoration, nothing unremarkable under here except the occasional surface rust. Power disc brakes have been added upfront, and power drum brakes on the rear bring the car to a halt effortlessly.

With a nearly original looking exterior, and an “interesting” choice of materials interior, mixed in with a high performance engine, this car is definitely a one of a kind Master 85, that will make you master of your domain as you drive it off the Classic Auto Mall property.
