2000 Plymouth Prowler
2000 Plymouth Prowler
Chrysler engineers were given free rein to design whatever they wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. Thomas C. Gale, Chrysler's design and international directors "love for 1930s-era hot rods” inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the retro-styled Plymouth Prowler. Gale, who has a hotted up 1932 Ford in his garage, approved the rod-inspired Plymouth Prowler as the company's follow-up show-stopper to the Dodge Viper. An early influence is credited to a Chrysler-sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design that resulted in a thesis by Douglas "Chip" Foose that included drawings of a retro-roadster. Foose "designed it as a coupe for Chrysler to begin with but later modified it to a roadster version."
For consignment a “retro rod” similar to an aftermarket hot rod body being built from the ground up with all the trimmings, only this one comes to us directly from a factory, the Chrysler factory. Only 19,600 original miles are on this unique facet of automobilia from a major manufacturer.
Whilst using predominantly aluminum panels and adhesive to blend them together, this Prowler is in excellent condition, with no rust or fillers, all original. Panels were then coated in PY3 which translates to Prowler Yellow CC. With its Indy style front wheels and suspension with added floating fenders that magically turn with the wheels, to its modern yet retro stylings, chopped droptop in black canvas, and curved back trunk, you are in 1932/2000 heaven! This car comes to us without the front bumpers attached.
Black leather abounds with the buckets sitting proudly and in near showroom condition. These flank a center console which houses a glovebox, cupholder, and autostick (a shift mounted version of the Tiptronic gear shift. Keeping in tune with other earlier rods, this has a center elongated yellow painted oval which houses the instruments. A/C, power windows, power door locks, and a stereo are seen on the dash as well. Above the steering column is a tachometer.
A 3.6 Liter V6 powers this light and nimble car, and is fuel injected. This is attached to a 4-speed (4LE) automatic transmission with the above noted autotronic auto gearshift actuated gearbox.
As expected, nothing of notability, just normal wear and tear, but it is really at a minimum. 4-wheel power disc brakes are seen, and all else is structurally sound.
My climb in and test drive revealed that there was a little “kick” that I encountered when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, but the car has excellent pickup, and ran smoothly otherwise. It's definitely a head turner, and not something you see every day, even at Classic Auto Mall where we see quite a lot, this is our first Prowler.
