1928 Ford Model A Sedan
The first Fordor Sedan offered on the Ford Model A chassis was the so-called “Leatherback” model, with a “two-window” roofline without rear quarter windows, covered in pebble-grain artificial leather. Promoted by Ford as the Fordor Sedan, it was intended to be a more comfortable Model A, and emphasis was placed upon the luxuriousness and quality of its interior fittings. Bodies of this style were produced by Briggs, in a leased corner of the Highland Park Ford plant and became available in mid-May 1928. The design continued into 1929, after which a “three-window” design was adopted for future Model A Fordors.
For consignment, a restored and mildly “rodded” Model A. All steel panels and fenders, as well as exterior lighting have been retained and restored, so the car looks mostly original save for the old spoked wheels being replaced by American Racing polished torque style wheels and wider tires. Overall a great presentation, that has been driven all over the East Coast.
A very tasteful combination of a dark taupe covers the straight steel panels of this car. Black fenders and running boards bring your eye to the bottom of the car, where the undercarriage shows black as well. Up top we see a beautiful brown covered top covered with the vinyl, (hence the name “leatherback”). Up front two large Model A chromed headlights flank a beautiful chromed Ford radiator cowling which is topped by the flying quail radiator cap. A 2-bar chromed front bumper curves to match the front profile of the car. Bringing up the rear are 2 small curved 2 bar bumpers, and a pair of rear taillights which protrude from the rear fender with a chromed bars. At the bottom are dual 2” exhaust pipes which rock this Model A when the fire is lit.
Again, good taste restoration continues here too, with miles of soft canvas like felt covering the bench seats, the door panels, and the vertical pillar surfaces. In front is a pristine shiny black dash. Centered within is the chromed “screaming mask” style instrument cluster which also has 2 additional gauges to help monitor the large mill which sits up front. A tall chromed shift lever with a black boot on the bottom, and a neat piston topper sits in the center. Carpeting appears nicely, and there are floor mats all over. Fronting the dash is a really nice art deco style steering wheel with a killer V8 logo in the center horn position.
Pretty simple, get rid of that clunky old 4 popper and throw a new Goodwrench crate 350ci mill in. Throw on some nifty headers, a few polished parts to add some bling, and a single 4-barrel Edelbrock carb to feed those fossils to this fire breather, and then attach a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic tranny behind, and this is where this car becomes a hot rod. Slick!
Of course, clean and noted are adjustable coil over shocks on every corner, front independent suspension with disc brakes, and drum for the rear with a 4-link suspension. A Flowmaster dual exhaust sales from the headers upfront to the chromed tips at the rear.

A great example of an all steel Fordor Leatherback, with some extra bling. No flames, no tricks, no errors, this ain't your grandfather's Model A, just mmmmmmm good!
