1962 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

1962 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster

With the second-generation Corvette now just one model year away, there were few within Chevrolet who did not view the 1962 Corvette as anything other than a transitional model between the classic styling of the C1 roadster and the far more competitive and edgy lines of the next generation Corvette. A simple glance would tell the tale of a 10-year saga that started out as a concept car that overcame many initial problems and deficiencies. With its classic looking front, to showing a bit of the futures hand in the rear, this car offers both sides of the story.

For sale, we have a consigner described overall car as “fair”. Over the years there have been many replacements, and body parts from various and sundry cars to keep it running. Overall it is an example of a 1962 Corvette, but if you are looking to bring something back to an original, this would not be your car. If you are looking for a 1962 driver, this is your car.

Exterior
Tuxedo Black respray from 1994, and it is in semi rough shape. There is excessive scratching and acid rain droplet staining. Areas of dullness show. The gray two tone cove area, which became a same color area this year, is showing wear, badging could be redone, front grille egg crate behind the bumper is in poor condition. Brite work has areas of dulling, some rust, and is in need of restoration. The convertible top is original to this car, but shows holes, dry rotted areas, and framework has surface rust, making it difficult to put top up and down. Incorrect wide white sidewalls with faux knockoff hub caps adorn all 4 corners. Also noted is the absence of the ribbed anodized aluminum trip plates which were on the rockers.

Interior
Tufted ribbing covers all surfaces from buckets to dash to door panels. All in black leather, some rips and tears are noted especially on the driver's bucket. The padded dash houses original gauges, which show that odometer, gas gauge, horn and wipers are currently not working. An aftermarket tachometer sits atop the steering column, and an original steering wheel is seen there too. The drop from the dash contains an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette Radio, temp and airflow knobs, with fan speed knob, and an original clock, which shows minimal rusting at the bottom of this clock. In the console is the shifter for the Muncie 4-speed, and an ashtray. Black carpet throughout the interior is in well worn, fair condition.

Drivetrain
A 350ci engine from a 1969 Corvette, with dual 4-barrel carburetors from a 1961 Vette and a Muncie 4 speed manual transmission make up the drivetrain. The engine has not been cleaned in quite a bit from the looks of the compartment, and the overall engine.

Undercarriage
The undercarriage shows some surface rust throughout various areas, but structural soundness is definitely there. A new rear crossmember has been welded on. Dual side piped exhaust snakes through the undercarriage and makes its way out from underneath the rockers just before the rear wheels.

Of course, as with each of the several different iterations of the C1 Corvette before it, the 1962 Corvette did undergo more than just a mechanical overhaul. Though the overall appearance of the '62 remained faithful to the styling of Harley Earl's earlier models, this new Corvette was, and remains, one of the most desirable of all the C1 models.
