1963 Ford Thunderbird Coupe

1963 Ford Thunderbird Coupe

“Flight Plan Cleared. Proceed to Thunderbird” reads the advertising, and indeed very apropos as during this time we were ushering in the jet age, and Ford seized upon this trend by working it into their design. In particular with the Thunderbird, AKA this year as “The Bullet Bird” with its turbine like rear, and the air piercing bullet aerodynamic front shape.

For consignment a bit of coup d'état on the original design in the form hinting of a resto-mod. Slammed, tubbed and painted over chrome in just the right spots gives this Bird a real custom cruiser look, and feel. Code named “Black Jack” as the plate states, here at Classic Auto Mall we like to refer to the special classics with our own names, so without further adieu we give you “The Black Bird”.

Exterior
A completely stripped, metalworked, straightened, and repainted on PPG Tuxedo Black, now presents as factory on the exterior. Blackened bumpers, shaved doors and badging, the restorer left just the right amount of chrome trim on this car. Finishing off the corners with what appears to be a pointed hubcap version of American Racing Torq Thrust Wheels.

Interior
Screaming red leather all new and firm to the touch, covers the rear bench, and the front buckets. Add a bit of black piping, and now you can move to the center console which is flanked by the seats in front and fronted by the screaming red dash that has stunning black horizontal ribbed metal inserts, perfect gauges that all work (even the clock folks!) all power windows, and matching door panels. Look skyward and you'll find a perfect headliner in …. Red… Looking at the floor it is awash in jet black carpeting. A shout out to the new aftermarket iPod/MP3/USB inputs as well as Satellite radio if you dare to subscribe to it. Speakers all around will satisfy any audiophile

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and you'll be greeted with an inundation of chrome and shine. A perfectly restored bay reflects…well...it reflects! The heart of which is the original 398ci 4-barrel V8 completely rebuilt at the 87,600 mile mark. Bore it over .030 and upgrade the valve guides and this baby will purr all day on unleaded fuel. Strapped to the back of this ultra-shiny mill, is a rebuilt TH700R4 automatic with overdrive, with which you can cruise for many miles at 75MPH and still get 16MPG. A Petronix distributor was added for extra reliability...look MA no points!

Undercarriage
Very solid with nice original floor pans, and frame rails. All original and rust free. Seen upfront are Performance slotted, cross drilled rotors with stainless nickel-plated calipers with newly inserted pads. Restored drums are seen on the rear, and a clean rust-free exhaust snakes its way from front to back.

This is the ultimate head turner, and you will have to look long and hard to find another one like it. What a great concept, use a working man's Ford, and turn it into a very special cruiser with all the work done for you. “Blackbird fly..into the light of the dark, black night.”
