1964 Avion T27 Camper
1964 Avion T27 Camper
“In the early 1950's, Robert Cayo and his family hooked their 19 foot Little Gem Travel Trailer to a 1951 Chevrolet and headed west for a family vacation. At the same time, Robert's older brother Loren and his family headed west in the Packard automobile with an Airstream in tow. The two families set up camp at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park. As they sat around the campfire, the two brothers talked about how their trailer could be improved. Both admired the aircraft type construction of the Airstream. But they agreed that they could manufacture a better trailer.” silveravion.com
For consignment, a 1964 Avion T27 that's been completely restored and now features custom walnut and cherry cabinets, updated gas and electric, and all the comforts of home in a streamlined yellow house on wheels!
Exterior
Coated in Butternut yellow, the shape hints at an Airstream with a flatter roof and raised seams over the clamshell ends. The windows, all nine of them, look very much like you would find on houses in this time period while the red painted wheels and dog dish hubcaps also present as period correct. A pair of red propane tanks are perched behind the tongue along with a battery box and control panel. An awning stretches almost the entire 27 feet, compactly contained in a silver tube. Out back, a spare tire with a cover portraying the Smiley Face, a graphic created in 1963 which would become a cultural icon. Also on the storage bumper is a period ice cooler with some woodgrain accenting and between the round tail lights we find a spigot.
Interior
Take a deep breath because we're about to time travel back to 1964 thanks to the attention to detail on the interior. We open the curved entry door to find a screen door, then step up into the entry where it feels like we've walked into someone's home as there are plastic dishes on the table and flowers in a vase, but what strikes you first is the beautiful wood and how it contrasts with the yellow walls. It all looks fresh and new and solid, a far cry from the veneer and vinyl overlays that would dominate campers for years to come. Varied shades of wood are lined up together with cherry and walnut providing warm tones that are inviting and vintage. The galley backsplash pays homage to the metal shelled trailers with brushed aluminum squares arranged in a brick-like configuration. Along with cabinetry, we have actual paintings on the wall, one over each bed and custom cushions fitted to wood frames in the eating area, with storage space underneath. The lavatory resides behind the door with the crescent moon and has a half wall of aluminum, privacy curtain over the window, and small stainless sink in a wood vanity. There's a Jensen radio/CD embedded on a cabinet side, a new refrigerator, roof A/C, and heater. Our consignor also states a new subfloor was installed at time of restoration.
We consign classics at Classic Auto Mall and this nicely restored trailer certainly qualifies! Avion created dozens of models over their many decades of production, this is an example you could actually use for its intended purpose more than 60 years after it was made. You would not be alone in your enthusiasm as vintage campers enjoy a fervent following with lots of collegial support. Trailer this into a car show with a car or truck from that era, and you've got a winning combination, and a place to take a nap while you wait for the trophy presentations!
