1957 Chevrolet 150 2-Door Sedan
1957 Chevrolet 150 2-Door Sedan
“The One Fifty four door sedan, which at $2048, (about $21,985 in 2022 dollars), was the cheapest four door new Chevrolet you could buy in 1957. The more upscale Two Ten and Bel Air post sedans started at $2174 and $2290, respectively, ($23,340 and $24,585 today). If you wanted a high zoot Bel Air convertible with a V8 engine, the MSRP was a daunting $2611, ($27,915 now). Later on, the Bel Air name came to designate cheaper Chevrolets, but in 1957 it carried as much prestige as its namesake neighborhood. The very cheapest new '57 Chevy, (not counting pickups), was the One Fifty Utility Sedan, a two door post car with no back seat and a price tag of just $1885, ($20,235 today).” Thx Autoweek.com, August, 2022
For consignment, a 1957 Chevrolet 150 2 door sedan with a title verified 46,902 actual miles, fully restored and packing a 327ci V8 under the hood and brightwork was the recipient of replating and polishing. Regardless of where they stood in the status line in 1957, in 2024 their coolness is on par with any Tri-Five you want to bring, and this one is a great example.
Exterior
Miles deep Onyx Black is dramatically contrasted by bright India Ivory two tone on the rear fender and decklid and with the dozens of 150's that have passed throughout our Hallowed Halls, we're liking this killer whale combination. It really comes together with the 14-inch steel wheels that are painted white and wear hubcaps with black accents. In profile, the ivory section is delineated with the silver panels trim, occasionally referred to as a hockey stick but also looking like a jet with a long tail and has black painted stamped accents. Up front, the epic Tri-Five face, a crowning chrome masterpiece of bumpers and grated grilles and headlight trim and rocket hood ornaments embedded in the sculpted metal. Like a piece of art, the contrasting chrome picks up on the polished stainless window trim on the windshield and the metal that hugs the tail fins, and it's all in very nice condition. The crossed flags on the rear quarter are the perfect accent, adding a touch of red and a matching checkered flag. We could not find any exterior flaws on this black and white cookie of a car.
Interior
The interior is dominated by silver and black, beginning on the door panels which are adorned with a pattern that can best be described as stone wall print on top of a smooth silver vinyl panel over a third panel in black. This pattern transfers onto the split bench seat where a silver top on the seat back gives way to the sketched wall design on the lower. It's wildly energetic and its good shape and the back seat is simply an extension of the patterns on the doors and seats. A 2 spoke silver steering wheel gives way to a slim column where the shifter resides and fronts a three gauge instrument cluster that includes temp and fuel flanking the large speedometer. This clean dash lacks the juke box like bling of the Bel Air and its simplicity fits the clean lines and organized palette of the car. The AM radio survives, and a triple gauge package has been added under the dash. The floor is covered with a rubberized mat and it, along with the stitched headliner and black windlace, is in excellent condition. A different rubber mat covers the trunk floor and surrounds a full-sized spare tire.
Drivetrain
Under the hood a spotless, show-worthy 327ci V8 with Rochester fuel injection and according to our consignor, putting out 350 horsepower. Behind it, a 3-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear axle with 3.90 gears with Positraction, per our seller. A bit of old school remains with drum brakes on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Generally clean underneath all the way up to the red oxide primer on the underbody. There is some minor surface rust on the leaf springs and grease build up on the knuckles and other steering components but the rest of the underside is dry. The headers lead to fat exhaust that meet at an X pipe then continue to meet up with a pair of Magnaflow mufflers before turning east and west and exiting modestly behind each rear wheel. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
The interior is open and airy and provides a comfortable perch to steer this sizable car along our test loop and it's got plenty of power underfoot and the 327 bellows through the hills of Morgantown. We note it pulls hard to the left when braking but otherwise tracks straight and handles well. The heater core is bypassed and the radio is inoperable, but all other functions onboard work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The creativity and variety of colors Tri-Fives provide a canvas for is limitless, especially given the two tone configuration. We've seen every color of the rainbow and this basic black and white is exceptional. It's a fast, clean, turnkey show car that's ready to provide another 70+ years of enjoyment. Like the car, the situation is black and white. It'll either end up in your garage, or not. Your call! (To the mall!)
