1999 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe
1999 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Coupe
“The Z28's 5.7-liter LS1 V8, a slightly detuned version of the Corvette's engine, is small compared with GM's old big blocks, but its displacement is vast compared with that of most passenger car engines offered today. The torque curve is like the Mississippi River, broad, deep, and flat. Once the Z28 begins to assert itself, it's all over. In the end, then, the Z28 takes another round in this ongoing rivalry and continues to be one of the best performance buys on the planet.” Excerpted from Car and Driver's February 1999 comparison of the Z28 and Ford Mustang GT.
For consignment, a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a title verified 86,398 actual miles, a new fuel pump and A/C compressor, and riding on replica Z06 wheels, keeping it in the high performance Chevrolet family.
Exterior
This car is awash in Flame Red paint with tasteful black accents that include the sport mirrors which are flowing extensions of the fender, the C-pillar and glass top, the black wheels, the trim around the tail lights, and the Z28 emblems. The body colored grille insert softens the controversial catfish face of the Camaro, which to us looks particularly aggressive with a scowl formed by the in turned headlights. In profile, this car is a robust wedge and the forward canted C-pillar contrast with the swept back attitude of the car, as if formed by wind, including the raked windshield, straight shoulder line, and flat flowing rear wing. The tri-colored tail light lenses break up the sea of red out back and are immediately recognizable, while rectangular exhaust exhausts the product of the V8's combustion. The paint and wheels are great and we could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
Standard fare here included charcoal and gray plastics in simple patterns on the door and fully ergonomic handles and controls. Gray leather bucket seats are up front on this F-body, tall and nicely bolstered with the driver's side showing some compression and usage but no tears. In the back, deep 2+2 seats offer a cozy place to sit with molded plastic side walls that offer an armrest and cupholders on the back of the front center console. A leather wrapped black steering wheel holds an airbag in the center and leads to a simple gauge cluster under a single pane of plexiglass with just the pertinent information displayed. The center stack is an integrated arrangement of the AM/FM/CD radio and simple climate controls, all with plastic buttons and knobs and in great shape. The center console houses the shifter, a cupholder, and the armrest and storage compartment that have all held up well over the past 23 years. Low pile gray carpet shows some usage but is fine and the gray panels along with the headliner above are in excellent condition. The visors show a bit of sag while the rear cargo area is clean.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we find a relatively clean bay with the venerable 5.7 liter LS1 V8 rated at 310 horsepower, fuel injected and backed by a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the rear wheels where there is a 10 bolt axle and 2.73 gears with Positraction. Power disc brakes are front and rear.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with plenty of surface rust on the usual components including the single exhaust which terminates at a FlowMaster muffler that puts out twin tailpipes. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a torque arm with coil springs in the back. We note no fluid anywhere nor build up on the knuckles and wheel components.
Drive-Ability
The Check Engine light on which our consignor states is likely a result of faulty air pump. It does not affect performance as the 5.7 fires right now up and tracks nicely across our test loop. F-bodies never disappoint with their ability to hit turns and there's plenty of power underfoot on this one. All functions work as they should although we didn't have a Smash Mouth CD to test the player. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
How can you go wrong with a car that was once deemed by Car and Driver as one of the best performance buys on the planet? Sure, performance cars and yes, Camaros have come a long way since 1999, but this car still holds its own and more importantly, is fun to drive! It's a lot of car for the money and with a flawless exterior in bright red, quite the looker.
