1964 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
1964 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
1964 was the second year of the second generation Corvette, (C2), and Chevrolet had planned on continuing the split window from 1963 until they received enough complaints about visibility to make a change for 1964. Although the hood vents would end with the 1963 model as well, depressions in the hood remained for the following year. This generation also introduced independent rear suspension, which would remain on the car even to this day and The Sting Ray name first appeared with this generation. The love affair continues to this day with the Corvette, straight from the mind of Zora Arkus-Duntov.
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette coupe, repainted in its original factory color two years ago and adorned with side pipes, an L88 type hood, and a possibly numbers matching transmission.
Exterior
Classic C2 styling with hidden headlights, connected split front bumper, and in this case, the spear on the nose fits into an aftermarket L88 type hood with a cowl leaning hood scoop that rises above the fender line. The car is painted in two stage Silver Blue Metallic which is a fantastic color that highlights the curves, vents, and body folds of the 1964, especially accentuating the muscular lifted fenders and the dual horizontal fender vents. The door frames fold into the roof in a sculpted and epic design cue, while the B-pillars wear flow through vents that provide incredible visual interest. The rear of the car is arguably one of the most beautiful designs in all of cardom, from the curved rear window that flows seamlessly into the a boat tail point which in turn spills into a valley rimmed by the peaks of the rear fenders. The dual tail lights, the split bumper, and even the gas cap are breathtaking. In profile, side pipes and 15-inch wheels with knock offs complete the art of the car. Paint and metal are excellent on the car and we could not find exterior flaws save for the driver's door upper frame not quite meeting the roofline properly.
Interior
Swing open the doors to reveal a vertical pattern in black vinyl split by a chrome trim piece, then a smooth bottom panel. All the black is offset by chrome window cranks, sliding knob for a door actuator, and two jet age reflectors. Black vinyl low back buckets are flanking a center armrest which sits behind a metal rimmed center console. This houses a chrome knobbed shifter, then the console climbs straight up to house a side mounted factory AM/FM stereo, various knobs and pulls and large chrome bezel black faced clock. Both sides split gracefully to their respective corners of the dash, but first take an opportunity to form 2 graceful cowls, one for the glovebox, and the other for the gauge cluster with six symmetrically positioned dials for the driver's reference. Both cowls have a black textured vinyl background which is very clean, with the glovebox having a brushed aluminum door. The faux wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel has a crossed flag center badge. Factory appearing black loop carpet covers the floors protected by Corvette embroidered mats. The trunk carries over the loop carpet and is completely covered and clean.
Drivetrain
It might look stock, but under the hood is a 383ci stroker with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, all backed by a Muncie M20. It's a potentially numbers matching unit although there's no date stamp on this 4-speed manual, meaning it could have been a restamp or service replacement unit. In any case, it sends power to the rear axle with 3.36 gears in what is very likely the original axle. Disc brakes are supplied up front with drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Textbook driver quality condition underneath with generous amounts of surface rust and patina. We note drops of oil on the oil pan and flywheel cover but the rear is dry, as are the knuckles and brake components. The dual exhaust head immediately sideways into the side pipes and suspension consists of coil springs up front and transverse leaf springs with tubular axle driveshafts in the back, making both sides independent.
Drive-Ability
While ergonomics and electronics have changed over the years with dramatic differences, there's nothing quite like the experience of driving a fully analog C2 Corvette that's in good condition. The 383 blares to life as we prime the Holley and turn the key and off we go around the loop where we find excellent acceleration, very nice handling and tracking, and braking that is definitely old school, but gets the job done. While the A/C is not working, all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A classic C2 Corvette that you can enjoy! There's no harm in having a concours level Vette if that's your thing. But if you want to get out and ride and not worry about putting a blemish on the undercarriage, this car fulfills that desire. Meanwhile, the exterior is in show worthy condition and simply by virtue of its C2 design.
