1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible

1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible

The name GTO, which was Pontiac Executive John DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato, ("Grand Tourer Homologated") which means officially certified for racing in the Grand tourer class.

If you're a fan of style, speed and comfort, you simply can't go wrong with this storied Pontiac GTO. The 'goat' practically defined the golden age of Detroit, and by the time its first production run was over, it had become the best-selling muscle car of all time. Not surprisingly, demand for these cornerstone classics continues to be strong. Check out the upgrades, marketing provenance, and sheer power on this “goat”.

Exterior
Tough, understated and attractive, this coupe perfectly defines Pontiac's lasting legacy of tempering sophistication with aggression. Draped in Montero Red, the front of the car is dominated by trademark twin grilles, which anchor a wide “GTO” script and ornate parking lamps between stacked T3 headlights and a broad bumper. Behind those grilles, an arrowhead-branded hood balances a tasteful scoop in front of clean glass that's founded in highly polished stainless. At the sides of that hood, expressive 'coke bottle' fenders form a sporty profile that centers traditional door handles and correct emblems between full rocker guards and a simple mirror. And at the back of those fenders, a stainless-trimmed valance hangs a sharp “PONTIAC” script and sinister taillights between small reverse lamps, an ominous “G T O” badge and a second broad bumper. Oh, and lest I forget a wonderful white convertible!

Interior
Parchment White vinyl buckets and a rear bench in showroom condition show no signs of wear. This same Parchment White covers the door panels, and also very clean handles etc. Black carpet floods the floor below these seats, and a black liner is seen under the convertible top. A simple but effective center console has a long storage compartment and houses the gearshift. Matching red metal fronts the dash, and padded vinyl covers the top of the dash. A large wood veneer area is home for various gauges, heater and vent air control, and an AM/FM/MP3 connected to a trunk mounted CD changer. The original steering wheel sits in front of the beautiful dash and is surrounded by a wood rim. A Pontiac manifold vacuum gauge sits proudly in back of the floor shifter, nearer to the underside of the dash. A shout out to the trunk which is noteworthy as well in that it is very clean and is covered in a checked plaid patterned vinyl.

Drivetrain
389ci of Muscle putting put a whopping 400hp is fed by 3 deuce factory Rochester carburetors. Bolted on back is a 4-speed Muncie transmission. Consigner states that a mere 7,000 miles are on these items since they were rebuilt.

Undercarriage
Absolutely a beautiful thing as it is extremely clean, and wonderfully rust free. Installed is a disc brake conversion, power steering, power brakes and a new 3.55:1 ring and pinion differential.

An overall excellent condition car from 1966. So excellent, it has won numerous awards, and was the star in several Coca Cola advertisements, and billboards. Excepting the top motor, this car is a beautiful time capsule find that is a driver and not a garage queen.
