1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Regular Production Option, (RPO), is a three digit standardized code used by General Motors to designate vehicle options and modifications. Very few of these codes end up in the actual name of a car, but there are some exceptions and Z28 is the most notable, indicating Special Performance Package. Corvette's Z06 is another RPO that's become part of the common name of the performance version, and L78, slightly more obscure, represents a particular big block. Z71 on the side of a modern Chevy truck is an RPO and translates to Truck Sports Package.
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a numbers matching engine and that was the recipient of a frame off restoration in 2008. But that was only after sitting idle in our consignor's garage for 30 years! He purchased it in 1978, drove it for a bit, then parked it. It's been driven just 1,434 miles since the restoration and now is ready for a new home. The hood, front right fender, and passenger door are original panels, all the rest were replaced during the restoration. A photo album that documented the restoration will accompany the car to the new owner.
Exterior
We were hard pressed to find any flaws on the Daytona Yellow paint that covers this car. Painted black stripes travel from the nose and over the cowl hood, broken by the roof, then reemerging on the trunk lid and over the spoiler. The chrome bumpers as well as the door handles, window trim, and side mirror are in very good condition. Additional metal trim includes the rain gutter which is clean and clear, wheel opening trim that shows no dings but does show some fitment issues, and the rocker panel trim, also nice. 1969 saw the introduction of the quarter panel decorative vents and they stand out against the yellow paint. 15-inch Chevrolet rally wheels continue the consistently good metal on the car and the twin tailpipes are icing on the cake.
Interior
Both door panels in black plastic and vinyl and tight and clean, as are the high backed bucket seats for the driver and front passenger. The back bench is nice and shows a bit of looseness in the tuck and roll portion but fully intact. Circle gauges and a clock are housed in square housing while a faux wood strip underlines the gauge cluster and dresses up a basic AM radio. The AC branded gauges include a 120mph speedometer and tachometer, augmented by the quad gauge package in the center console. Wood print covers the shifter housing where we find a white knobbed Hurst shifter and the shift pattern plaque, showing some acceptable patina. Black loop carpet covers the floor and shows just a bit of wear, and the stitched headliner is in good condition, holding the shoulder belts up with clips.
Drivetrain
A spotless, show ready engine bay reveals itself as we lift the hood. Inside is a numbers matching 302ci V8 rated at 290 horsepower and being served fuel by a DZ coded four-barrel carburetor. The heads are correct but not original. Big news behind the engine however as an M22 Muncie 4-speed manual “rock crusher” transmission that is not original to the car is employed to transfer power to the 12 bolt rear with 3.73 gears and positraction. Power brakes are supplied with disc in front and drum in rear.
Undercarriage
More show quality cleanliness here as well! We can't remember the last time we saw a polished gas tank, but here it is, flanked by beautiful chrome exhaust pipes. The rest of the stainless exhaust including the stock style muffler where the dual exhaust meets briefly, is spotless. Coil springs are found on the front independent suspension and leaf springs carry the back.
Drive-Ability
This restoration may be from 2008, but it certainly feels fresh and is a testament to proper storage and care. The 302 booms to life and we shift the trusty rockcrusher into first and do a lap or two to test the car's features. Obviously, it has substantial power and a great sound to go along with it. It tracks straight and handles well around turns at low speeds. We confirm the consignor's report that the dome light, reverse lights, and interior clock are all not working, but everything else is and it's a sweet ride.
If you've read this far, you might be in the market for a classic Z28. Well, this is certainly one to consider. It's obvious that time and effort, and likely a bit of money went into the restoration of a beloved car owned since 1978. It's got great color, a matching numbers engine, and let's not forget the legendary M22 crushing rocks between the bucket seats. Okay, enough reading. Time to make the call!
