2005 Maserati Gransport Coupe

2005 Maserati GranSport Coupe

The Maserati GranSport was the sportier version of the Coupe produced from 2001 to 2007.  These are true grand touring cars with two doors, front engine configuration, rear wheel drive, and seating for four.  Penned by famed Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, this model of the high end brand included luxurious leather interiors and some race inspired components.  Between 2004 and 2007, only 2,613 GranSport hardtops were produced.

For consignment, a 2005 Maserati GranSport Coupe with a title verified 38,546 actual miles.  It's been sorted out with some recent repairs and major service including a new clutch, throwout bearing and RMS, newer tires, and a modern head unit with touchscreen and backup camera.  These are rare cars with a tuned sound meant to get the blood going, and it never fails to do so.

Note:  Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area

Exterior
Like the Mediterranean Sea, the Anniversary Blue paint is deep and shimmers in the sunlight.  The door handles, sport mirrors, and cladding all carry the blue in a monochromatic treat for the eyes.  Those “body kit” parts are intended to help with aerodynamics, but they also create a low, aggressive attitude and peak with the rear fascia that hugs the exhaust tips and diffuses the air through a mesh style vent.  Mesh also covers the front grille emblazoned with the Maserati trident emblem, immediately recognizable and associated with historic sports car racing.  Projector beam headlights are covered with a plexiglass shields and smooth the nose like the blue sharks off the Amalfi coast.  On the decklid, a subtle wing rises modestly atop a flat tail with two large taillights split wide.  The GranSport specific 19-inch alloy wheels look fantastic in their polished aluminum finish and are wrapped in 35 series tires with a date code of late 2021.  The chin has kissed the ground and left some scrapes and along with one other scratch on the paint being the only major flaws on the exterior that we note.

Interior
By supercar standards, the exterior is rather understated.  But the interior is where this car screams exotica!  Leather clad door panels combine dark blue with baby blue in a simple design and pleated storage pouch down low.  The sport bucket seats mirror the colors with light blue inserts and darker blue surround.  Our consignor believes that because of the white piping around the inserts, this spec might be one of one and with a quick internet search, we were able to find the color combo but not the white piping, so he may be on to something!  The 2+2 back buckets are deep, well bolstered, and look like they've never been used.  A pull down armrest below the embroidered Trident mark is available for back seat occupants along adjustable vents.  The race inspired steering wheel fits your hands like a glove and large paddle shifters are a fingertip away.  Blue faced gauges in touring car minimalism lie ahead, and below it a strip of baby blue streams across the entire dash.  The center stack is where we find the climate controls, AM/FM/CD player with Bluetooth and touchscreen and various control buttons.  In the center, we find a carbon fiber console housing the tiny electronic shifter, hand brake, and various mode and operational buttons.  Dark blue low pile carpet covers the floor with Maserati branded carpeted mats on top in good condition.  You'll find light blue, like a sky, above your head on the cloth headliner.

Drivetrain
A 4.2 liter DOHC V8 power plant is under the hood and looks amazing with its snaking intake plenum, red cam covers, and the Maserati Trident front and center.  The engine is rated at an impressive 396 horsepower and is fuel injected.  The 6-speed automatic transmission recently had the clutch, throw-out bearing, and rear main seal replaced at 38,419 miles with all receipts and documentation to accompany the car.  Power is sent to the rear axle with 3.73 gears and power disc brakes with Brembo 4 piston calipers are on all four wheels.

Undercarriage
Generally clean underneath with no surface rust of fluids to speak of.  All boots and bushing look good.  The dual exhaust flows from the engine and encounters Fabspeed catalytic converter delete pipes in stainless steel, (the OEM catted pipes are included with your purchase), then travel the center tunnel, meet at an X-pipe, then head to the back where stock style mufflers tuck under the extended rear valance and exit through it.  Both ends of the car feature independent suspension with double wishbone and coil spring configuration.

Drive-Ability
Alright maestro, fire it up.  At idle the exhaust sings a sweet song, but the crescendo happens with a little more throttle.  We swing this blue beauty around the loop to check on functionality but like the Marriage of Figaro, it's all about the music.  That said, we're happy to report that all functions get a check mark on our report as everything works as intended.

A drivable exotic car that would also be a welcome sight at Cars and Coffee or just about any other gathering of car people.  It has subtle beauty for an Italian, devoid of flashy wings, ducts, and body vents.  It's almost pedestrian in its outer appearance but special enough to turn heads.  More Marisa Tomei than Sophia Loren, if that helps.  It's rare and unique and awaits a new il guardiano del Maserati.
