1968 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

1968 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

The 1968 received minor changes for its second year.  The grill took on a more horizontal look while the vent windows were dropped and "Astro Ventilation", (i.e. flow-through ventilation), was added.  Side marker lights were added while the SS396 received revised chrome hood inserts. (the SS350s stayed with the 1967 styling).  Underneath, the 1967 Camaros pesky axle tramp was cured by the addition of multi-leaf rear springs to replace the single-leaf units and rear shock absorbers were now staggered.  A new 350hp 396ci option for the SS was added, while the Z28 option, (now just labeled MO), actually received some publicity and sold 7,199 units.  The Z28s were now easier to spot as they sported Z28 or 302 badges.

For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro convertible bathed in Matador Red, exposed headlights, a manual convertible top and a very accurate representation of what you would see on the streets in the late 60's and early 70's.  This beautiful example was purchased locally by our consignor in 2013 and was treated to a new camshaft, valve job and new exhaust manifold.  Lest I forget it has a snazzy interior right out of 1968, which is groovy baby.

Exterior
A fantastic blacked out horizontal ribbed front grille leads the way with outboard exposed headlights and markers and a small bowtie in the center.  A color change respray was performed from the original Ermine White to a lustrous shade of Matador Red which is well applied with a deep shine, but is showing a few minor bubbles at the wheel arch areas in the rear.  Simple shiny bumpers are on and looking great as well as other attachments in the shine department including a single side view mirror, wipers and window trimmings, handles and locks as well as nice badges.  On top is a black convertible top which has a fairly clear plastic rear window, the manually operated top goes up and down with ease.  On the back, keeping with the pony car theme is a short trunk deck, and the rear fascia sports chrome bezels and sunken tail lights flanking the red fuel filler cap.  Standard issue 14-inch wheels are dressed with factory covers and are wrapped with thin white walls in 205/75R14 format on all 4 corners.

Interior
With the top down we can say “I can see clearly now the top is down, and it's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day”…but I digress.  Just 1968 fab in here with red vinyl that is appearing original with no tears and just some light age fade.  Low back buckets are in front, and a bench in back.  All this wonderful stuff is floating in a sea of slightly faded red carpeting with factory correct red rubber mats.  Moving to the dash, we shake hands with a duo of the deep set round gauges within black bezels.  The angled dash front is pristine and painted Matador and has eyeball Astro vents within it that are chromed.  The center portion of the dash is made up of more textured black and chrome for the bezel that holds within the temp sliders, factory AM radio and requisite ashtray.  Beautifully sculpted door panels have chromed window cranks, more chrome delineation markers, and clean armrests.  All very clean and very cool looking with the beautifully buttoned up presentation.

Drivetrain
A flip of the fully restored and painted red hood underside reveals a pleasant surprise for this writer.  No powerhouse tire shredding big block here, just a simple and reliable 250ci inline 6 cylinder within the nicely presenting black engine bay.  The orange painted mill has been treated to a new camshaft and valve job as well as a new 1-barrel carburetor to feed the precise quantities of air and fuel.  We note the points have been removed and now the mill is fired by electronic ignition.  Bolted to the back is a 2-speed Powerglide automatic and wayyyy in the back is a 10- bolt rear axle.  Another part of this car deserving a standing ovation is the orange painted block with contrasting black air cleaner, corrosion free bolt ons, new exhaust manifold and shiny supple hoses and wires.

Undercarriage
The hits just keep on coming for the undercarriage, as we meet up with a solid and rust free suspension, drivetrain, and floor pan unibody construction.  The usual suspects show some very light surface rust, but no structural issues are to be seen within miles of this bottom side.  A single piped stock style exhaust is on for the exhale and as a bonus this car is equipped with power steering.  Drum brakes are attached to the independent coil sprung front suspension and make a second appearance on the leaf spring rear set up.

Drive-Ability
We clamored to drive this baby, and it was worth the draw of a name from a hat which I won, (it may be because I had my name there 7 times).  Anyway, it performed beautifully with great acceleration, great handling, and bias free panic stopping.  AND I look like a superstar driving it because it's sooooo nice.

I dare you to find a nicer and more honest version of a '68, (THE year to have), Camaro.  Just all the attention to detail is worth the price of admission, and when you get in you are in an E for an exciting ticket ride.  A real head turner can create a 1 car parade on main street, and you'll only be going for groceries.
