1966 Ford Mustang Convertible

1966 Ford Mustang Convertible

Millions of Ford Mustangs have been produced over the years with thousands of iterations, special editions, engine choices, tuner versions, and colors.  Few American cars have the following that Mustangs do and there are active clubs throughout the country as well as both manufacturer and aftermarket cottage industries that thrive as a result of the car's existence.  And it can ALL be traced to the first generation, the OG of the Mustang world and the legend.

For consignment, a beautiful 59,824 title verified mileage first generation Mustang from 1966 in the color of a sweet, white wine from France, recently restored to stock specs with some tasteful enhancements.  A photo album of the restoration in included with your purchase and gives you some insight into the depths of the restoration.  Iacocca was on to something when he designed these cars because we've brought multiple cars to events and the early Mustangs never failed to gain attention.  This one will almost certainly draw crowds whether you're at a car show or just filling up the tank.

Exterior
Bathed in a new coat of its original color, Sauterne Gold, its stunning presentation with the ivory-colored soft top up or down.  The 15-inch Scott Drake Styled Steel Wheels are a dramatic interpretation of the Mustang wheels.  The two stage paint is very nice and all the metal work including the bumpers and emblems are in excellent condition.  The 1966 grille lacks the vertical and horizontal chrome line attached to the center horse corral and the presence of rear reverse lights are also correct for the '66.  The canvas top is in excellent condition including the clear, plastic window.  The only imperfections noted were some scratches on the rocker panel trim and a chip off the rear valance where it meets the body on the very bottom.

Interior
True to its roots, the interior color pattern is Ivy Gold and White luxury vinyl, also known as the Pony interior.  The beautifully restored door cards are painted to match the exterior with ivory colored panels and stitched vinyl inserts.  The front bucket seats match and look stunning in Ivy Gold with White inserts and the rear bench mirrors the front arrangement, all in like new condition.  A dark wood steering wheel with three spoke design matches the gauge surround, it's as if an interior decorator put this car together!  The center speedometer is flanked by two smaller gauges on each side. The Ivy dash pad over the White painted bottom half is clean and show worthy.  Even the steering column is painted in gleaming white paint that still looks wet.  The floor mounted shifter is surrounded by green/gold loop style carpet and matching mats, all presenting very well.

Drivetrain
The correct 289ci V8 sits squarely between the front fenders and is put into motion with the help of a C4 3-speed automatic transmission back to the Ford 8” rear and 2.80 TracLoc gears.  Power brakes are found on the car with discs up front and rears out back.  The engine bay is very clean and dominated by Ford blue.  We can't help but notice a larger aluminum radiator has been added.  Otherwise, it retains a stock appearance and is ready for shows!

Undercarriage
More show worthiness here as it's immaculate underneath.  The dual exhaust flows to a pair of Flowmaster mufflers then loops over the rear axle and out the back via chrome tips.  Coil sprung independent suspension in front and leaf springs out back.  From the gas tank to the oil pan and everything in between is very, very clean.

Drive-Ability
The muffled rumble of the 289 cuber is a welcome sound and we pull the simple shifter into drive and hit the loop.  The tires have the slightest little stagger, 215/65R15 on front and 225/60R15 on back, and probably contribute to the fine ride and seamless ability to turn in with planted feet and decent acceleration.  There are no rattles, no wind noise, nothing unusual.   It's like driving off the dealer lot in 1966!  One faux pas however as the reverse lights go on with neutral but off when in reverse.  Sounds like an easy fix!

We were wowed with the appearance of this classic Mustang and we see a lot of them.  The beautifully blended colors and layout is instantly impressive and pleasing to the human eye, regardless of your level of car interest.  This is one of those “living room” cars, one that would look right at home inside the house as it does outside the house, especially when you paint the walls to match.  Then you can sit on your designer sofa with a glass of French white wine and soak in the beauty of this car.
