2017 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS 50th Anniversary Edition Convertible

2017 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS 50th Anniversary Edition Convertible

Imagine going back in time and showing the engineers and developers of the 1967 Camaro a modern version.  First, they might be astounded that their “concept” lasted 50 years, (with a burp or two along the way), and they would further be surprised that each year, a celebration of Camaros attracts thousands of people and hundreds of Camaros, (see: Camaro Nationals, July 19 + 20, Classic Auto Mall).  But most of all, when they see a car with heated seats, heated steering wheel, a head's-up display, and an infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, their minds would be blown.

For consignment, a Camaro to celebrate the 50th anniversary and the legacy of the model itself.  Millions of Camaros have been built, but you can only celebrate the 50th anniversary in one year, 2017.  As such, Chevy created a special appearance package only available to the LT and SS models.  In all, 5.982 of the anniversary edition Camaro SS's were built, and 717, (or 817 depending on the source), of those were Nightfall Gray convertibles.  What we have here is a title verified 25,909 actual  mileage example with all the bells and whistles.  A top that drops for fun in the sun and big V8 under the hood to show those Mustangs who's boss.

Exterior
All anniversary editions are covered in Nightfall Gray Metallic and have a graphic package specific to them.  It starts with a fat, matte charcoal stripe on the hood and trunk, flanked by orange side stripes.  The orange is seen again in the “Fifty” emblem on fenders and the decklid.  Special 20-inch wheels have matching gray accents and wide enough spokes to show off big painted calipers.  The gaping front grille is comprised of geometric shapes, angular like much of the car, and a front splitter makes the dramatic fascia even more aggressive.  We note some scrapes on the bottom side of the splitter.  A striped wing contours the trunk lid and a bumper extender surrounds four big exhaust tips.  The canvas top is black and in excellent condition and operates electronically wherein it is folded under a large body panel.  We note some malformations on a tire including a bubble along with some minor curb rash on the wheels.  All tires are from mid-2020.

Interior
Two-tone black and gray leather bucket seats have orange stitching, and the same pattern is found on the rear seating for two, split by the center console which flows from the front and includes a phone charging pad.  The seats show very little wear.  The leather wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel also shows orange stitching and leads to a view of the dash with two analog gauges for tach and speed and a contoured center electronic read out.  Some of the coating on the flat bottom of the wheel is checking we note.  The infotainment system includes Bluetooth, Navigation, MYLINK, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and XM satellite capabilities.  The shifter boot and handle pick up the orange stitching as well.  The interior is in excellent condition, consistent with a car with under 30,000 miles.  The small trunk is lined and very clean.

Drivetrain
Under hood we have a 6.2 liter LT1 good for 455 horsepower handled by a 8L90E 8-speed automatic transmission headed to the rear wheels and a 2.77 axle.  Power disc brakes are all on four wheels with four piston fronts and four piston rears.   No spare room in the engine bay where a plastic cover mostly hides the engine and accessories fill the rest.  All looking very clean with little sign of wear.

Undercarriage
The dual exhaust meets an x-pipe after two catalytic converters, then heads into a massive muffler that gives way to four exhaust tips.  Heat shields buffer the temps from the pipes.  The belly pan, framing, and suspension pieces, all very clean and undamaged.  Both ends have independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link independent suspension in back.  Tire sizes are 245/40ZR20 in front and 275/35ZR20 in back.

Drive-Ability
The car started up with that familiar LT1 burble we've grown to love, aggressive without being too loud.  The interior is a comfortable place to be with soft materials to cushion your experience and good bolstering on the seats.  With an elbow on the armrest, we shifted into drive and did our basic loop with nothing unexpected popping up.  The electronic readout is a mesmerizing collage of colors and the head's up display can be toggled on or off.  This car comes to us fully loaded with every option you could get on this special edition.

This one checks all the boxes.  Fast, collectible, a drop top, and if need be, drivable every day.  It has low miles but not miles so low you don't need to put it in a plastic bubble, here's one you can enjoy.   We don't know if there will be other “anniversary” editions, but here's an opportunity to join an elite club of a limited edition owner with a car that tells the story of a legacy automobile.  We hope to see you at the Camaro Nationals with your new ride!
