1913 Ford Model T Huckster

1913 Ford Model T Huckster

A huckster is anyone who sells something or serves biased interests, using pushy or showy tactics.  Historically the term meant any type of peddler or vendor, but over time it has assumed pejorative connotations.  The original meaning of huckster is a person who sells small articles, either door-to-door or from a stall or small store, like a peddler or hawker.  The term probably derives from the Middle English hucc, meaning "to haggle".  The word was in use circa 1200, (as "huccsteress").  During the medieval period, the word assumed the feminine word ending "ster" as in huckster, reflecting the fact that most hucksters were women.

For consignment, from the early production days of the Model T we have one from 1913 and it's a Huckster.  Steel and wood, lath and tin, and a 177ci internal combustion engine and all restored in 1988-89.  Used in parades and other fun activities it runs great and if you can figure out the pedals to make it go forward, you're in business to do some hagglin' .

Exterior
From the brass era where we see a brass radiator surround and brass headlights starting us off on our verbal journey.  A black engine cowl is on and off of the sides are curved thin fenders and a running board in between.  The brass is slightly dulled and pitted and has some delamination on the radiator surround.  Black paint has numerous chips and scratches and a small area of surface rust on the hinged hood top.  The fenders show some paint peel off and underlying surface rust just as they meet with the running boards.  There is some black structural steel covering the area between the running board and wood body.  Speaking of which, the remainder of this truck with a pickup body and long roof is all pure wood.  Solid oak panels with some stretchers and side panels that angle out on the bed top to help keep things inside are seen with black painted ironwork.  Taller square stock rises for the roof supports and these have quarter circles of cast iron to hold these vertical rises to the roof.  The roof is made up of oak lath strips for the headliner and black canvas above.  A tailgate is installed in the back and if you lower it a nicely reserved wide oak plank bed is revealed.  30-inch wood spoke wheels have 30x3 oversize tires attached.

Interior
For the driver we see a simple oak bench with a black padded vinyl seat.  A large thick wood steering wheel fronts an oak dash which holds the ignition box and some brass timing and throttle levers. The 3 pedal setup is on the floor.  Floors are also oak planks.  Paint on the attached boxes etc on the dash is peeling and is black.  A beautiful brass horn with a squeeze bulb on the end says get out of my way!

Drivetrain
Under the cowl is a slightly rusted and patinaed 177ci 4 cylinder engine.  A 1 barrel carburetor is on top and a 2 speed planetary transmission is on back   The rear axle is a 3.64 gear ratio.  Knob and tube-esque wiring is in the engine bay and some other simpler hoses are noted.

Undercarriage
Very simple design with wood floor boards showing nicely underneath for the structure of the floors, and some steel framing in the edges. Transverse leaf springs cushion the rutty muddy road rode and mechanical drum brakes are on the rear only.

Drive-Ability
This car is a crank to start and does so fairly easily.  Throttle on the steering column, spark advance all the way up and she fired up.  Driving is a 3 pedal system with a low and high gear pedal on the left, a reverse pedal in the center and a brake pedal on the right.  It ran smoothly and the steering was fairly easy.

A pretty neat example over 110 years old and still drives and runs.  Huckster bed and Model T brass upfront, she's a real piece of motoring history.
