1931 Lincoln Model K 201 Sport Touring Phaeton

1931 Lincoln Model K 201 Sport Touring Phaeton

The Lincoln K series, (also called the Lincoln Model K, in line with Ford nomenclature), is a luxury vehicle that was produced by the Lincoln Motor Company between 1931 and 1940.  The second motor line produced by the company, the Model K was developed from the Model L, including a modernized chassis on a longer wheelbase.  In 1931, Lincoln also introduced a V-12, becoming a feature of the company for nearly 20 years.

A barn find condition 1931 Model K Phaeton, initially picked up with the engine parts in a basket, then our consignor rebuilt it from the parts provided as well as some newer replacement parts.  The engine is now running perfectly.  The exterior and interior have the traits of a luxury car still on but they all will need some TLC to bring it back to its original glory.  It appears to have a like new canvas top.  Start dreaming and think of all the possibilities...hey its only money!

Exterior
This 4 door very roomy convertible sedan starts off with a dual bar front bumper and some large chrome bezel headlights flanking a vertical ribbed grille.  The radiator surround is rusted but has the greyhound hood ornament radiator cap.  The body is painted in Copra Drab, (think patina army olive drab), and shows many areas of rub off, cracking and crazing, chips and dents and dings.  Surface corrosion is minor for the body, as the majority is aluminum, with most of it seen on the glass surrounds.  Fenders and running boards are in black with the boards having an unpainted steel piece repair inserted on the passenger's side.  Both sides have an inset spare tire in the front fender next to the cowled hood.  There are some smaller areas of surface rust seen on these.  The only glass on this car is for the windshield and curved front panels at the beginnings of the front doors.  The remainder of the cabin is open air.  A like new canvas top is on and it is presenting in tan.  The back of the car has another dual bar bumper and a fold down chromed trunk tray.  Stalked tail lighting hangs off of the rear of the car.  19-inch wire wheels painted black are surrounded by 6.50/7.00-19 tires.

Interior
As I enter the formerly glorious chocolate brown leather covered interior I can envision the former glory of all the wood and leather surfaces and see the car definitely has potential.  One of the door panels has actually been recovered; the remaining doors are original.  As are the front and rear benches, the front suffering from cracking and tearing of the leather and the back overstuffed leather bench is just aged.  In back, brown carpeting covers the floors and in the back of the driver's seat is a wood panel with several panels and storage units worked within this space for the rear passengers.  In front the original steel dash front is in and in black.  A central oval patina chromed panel houses the instruments.  In front of this dash is a big bakelite steering wheel.  A plywood covered floor has the long armed shifter and handbrake reaching for the driver.  Curved fairing strips are providing the interior structure for the canvas top and these look new.

Drivetrain
Under the long cowled hood is the original factory engine painstakingly put back together by our consignor and it's a 384.8ci V8  It has a single 2-barrel carburetor on top and a factory 3-speed manual transmission on back  A stock exhaust is on and a 4.58 geared rear axle turns the tires.

Undercarriage
An interesting thing about this undercarriage is the front part of the structural steel is heavily surface rusted, then the framing magically turns to newly painted black at the midpoint.  It is difficult to tell whether it's been repaired or just the beginning of the restoration process so you will need to view these photos closely.  Leaf springs are for the ride and mechanical drum brakes are in all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
The car fired right up and on the test track it worked well.  All surfaces as mentioned will need TLC but mechanically it appears fairly sound.

A barn find or you could call it a diamond in the rough.  All the features are there, it does have a fine running engine, a new top, and some recent undercarriage work?  Go ahead, make your garage's day and get to work!
