1962 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop

1962 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop

Residing on the African Savannah and confronted with a threat, the sleek, nimble, and fast Impala will take flight to outrun or confuse its competitor.  Aptly named, the Chevrolet version introduced in 1958, continued to emulate its animal namesake through years of design modifications, and power options made available.

Here in the classy corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of cars with all kinds of purposes.  Some classics to be shown, others to be driven, and others to do both.  Here we have a classic that exemplifies early muscle cars.  It is to be driven and can be shown with ease.  Restored in the early 1990's, these upgrades, (a now 327ci V8), and replacements are still holding their own on this car.  Read on!

Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking egg crate grille, and lower wrap around bumper, to the aluminum machined pattern spear at its belt line, the dual sets of three taillights, and lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice brite-work, and chrome to feast your eyes on.  Wrap around chrome window surrounds, especially on the front curve around the corner glass and cursive “Impala SS” badging with the galloping Impala in a circle and the crossed flags V badge on both front quarter panels shines brightly against its Silver Blue Metallic drenched steel.  The paint is very nice, it is miles deep with well minded gaps.  A few imperfections and dings are seen mostly on the lower parts of this car, but they are minor.  Out back are the traditional Impala 3 tail lights within a ribbed aluminum field and below is a near flawless chrome bumper.  The overall presentation is near perfect and looking just fine on the exterior.  And lest I forget, it has 15 inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped with 215/65R14's in front and staggered 235/60R15's on back.

Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this hardtop, we are met with warm light blue square pattern stitching and chromed “buttons” if you will, delineating the squares.  A curved thin molding separated these squares from a horizontal ribbed pattern below and embedded throughout are the near perfect handles for window cranking, and door opening.  As we move inside a nicely presenting split back bench framed in chrome stretches from door to door.  The seats are covered in smooth blue vinyl for the bolsters and the inserts are a dark blue and white stripe broadcloth.  The uppers are more stitched rectangles in smooth vinyl and buttons are in the corners.  Beautifully chromed tubs support the backs of these seats and in back is a matching rear bench.  A rear bench is across the back with an iconic Impala badged rear speaker between the top of the bench style seats.  A futuristic stylish early mid century modern near perfect padded dash with original gauges knobs and pulls within a horizontal ribbed chromed panel is in front.  All original for the steering wheel in very good condition fronts the dash.  On the hump is a Hurst shifter.  Very nice thick pile darker blue carpeting covers the floors and is protected by factory rubber mats, and a warm blue headliner hangs tightly above.

Drivetrain
Replacing the original 6 cylinder engine is now a hefty 327ci V8.  The bore of it is 4.030 and stroke is 3.250.  It has an orange/red painted GM block and valve coverings and these look like new.  On top of the dual plane intake is an Edelbrock 4-barrel 650cfm carburetor.  The Hurst shifter goes through the 4 gears of the Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission.  Power gets thrown rearward to a 3.08 rear axle.  Headers and a turbo muffler exhaust system is on.  Supple hoses, updated electrics and all buttoned up under this beautifully restored engine bay.

Undercarriage
Power front disk brakes are in front along with a rebuilt front end suspension kit which includes independent coil springs.  For the rear suspension we see a 4 link with coil springs and power drum brakes from the factory.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and easy driver with nice acceleration, good bias free panic stopping and all functions working as they should be save for the clock not keeping time and the horn gone silent.  A veritable trip back to 1962 when times were simpler and cars had character.

Overall Impala from 1962 this car presents very nicely and goes like a rocket ship.  This one comes with an upgraded in power engine, and all well maintained, nice interior, the exterior is beautifully preserved too.  A fine example of an early upgraded to muscle car that is on a few steroids.
