1976 Ford F250 4x4 Highboy

1976 Ford F250 4x4 Highboy

When you delve into the history of Ford 4x4s, you will bump into certain terms that won't make much sense at first.  Terms like highboy, dentside, and bumpside muddy the waters of what folks are talking about, but with some explanation, delineations between different year models, available packages, weight ratings, suspension, and more, will begin to make sense.  The meaning of "highboy," when it comes to the Ford Truck line, is a bit more complicated.  That term has an unofficial history of use in reference to the first four-wheel-drive trucks and isn't necessarily used for Fords alone.  The first 4x4s were aftermarket conversions of two-wheel-drive trucks.  These trucks generally had a divorced transfer case that made a taller stance obligatory.  Later the term began to be used to refer to pre-1977 ½ Ford F-250 trucks, (1967-1977 ½), with 4WD and a divorced transfer case.  -Thx to Motor Trend

For consignment, a rarity of the truck world in the form of a great looking and tastefully upgraded Ford F250 4x4 pickup.  Add in that these days pickup trucks are hotter than the world's climate, then mix in the fact this is a sought-after Highboy model and you have a sure-fire winner.  Dim the lights, open the curtain, and let the show begin!  APPLAUSE sign blinking…

Exterior
Can you take me higher?…is what best describes the buttoned-up exterior of this truck.  All steel panels are maintaining their factory specifications with well minded gaps and all draped in a wonderful coating of Periwinkle blue.  For the paint, we are swimmin' in the deep end of the pool.  Browsing over the remainder of the exterior, we see plenty of straight rust and dimple free chrome, all perfect badging, a nicely polished grille surround with an attached black push bar and KC lighting, and some snazzy small chromed tube step up helpers on either side.  This is a standard cab and has a fuel tank behind the seat, (one of the clues we have a Highboy on our hands).  We see clean windows all around with nicely polished mirrors along with a fiberglass body matching visor.  Behind the visor is a dual big rig horn setup.  The long bed starts off with a big chrome tubed rollbar with its top edge lined with high intensity Eagle Eye spotlights.  The long bed is covered with a black spray in bed liner and is fairly clean.  All is very well on the back gate with all original FORD embossings in Periwinkle and a rear chrome bumper.  17-inch polished and drilled wheels are wrapped by deep tread Discoverer All Terrain rubber on all 4 corners.  Let's get dirty.

Interior
An integral part of this truck's appeal is the interior.  This one has factory black vinyl square tops and an inserted molded plastic armrest/actuator panel.  Stepping up inside we plant our bodies on some gray velour broadcloth high back buckets in good condition.  There is a center fold down jumpsuit that converts into an armrest if you want.  These chairs float in clean black carpeting and this cozies to a blue steel and black plastic factory dash, but now with some more modern circular chrome bezel gauges on either side of the factory speedo.  There is also a tachometer which is attached to the Grant GT rally steering wheel topped column.  The radio has been upgraded to a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player.  Shift levers are reaching for the driver from the hump and a foot shaped cover is on the go pedal.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a patina and dust covered engine bay we see blue heads, blue valve covers, blue block, and open blue chromed air cleaner cover on the 390ci V8 that is not original to the truck.  This mill is topped by a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor and it uses a cast factory intake.  On the back is a New Process 435 4-speed manual transmission.  On the way back is a Dana 60 rear and sending power via the divorced transfer case to the front is a Dana 44 axle.   Headers and a Flowmaster exhaust are now on for the exhale.

Undercarriage
The bottom edge of the rear roll pan has some heavier surface rust and the remainder of the undercarriage very light areas of the surface rust.  Providing the ride both front, and on back is a leaf spring suspension.  Power discs are up front while power drums bring up the rear.  We note the previously mentioned divorced transfer case, another clue that this is a factory Highboy, a tall star if you will!

Drive-Ability
Slipping inside this truck fires right up and is ready to go.  And go it does with easy shifting, nice acceleration, and all working controls and readouts.  The AC has been removed and the reverse lights are dark.

Excellent job I'd say for this example of the F250 extra tonnage pickup truck.  A nice job on the paint and exterior embellishments of chrome.  Now a shower and a hauler for the business who wants to attract some classic attention.  Show up to your job site and talk to a customer from this beauty!  It's all over but the crying, curtain call for a bow please!!  A P P L A U S E …
