1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Hardtop

1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Hardtop

Over the past 112 years, Chevrolet has built such a vast empire of lovable offerings that some of them just seem to get overlooked.  Possibly the most substantial victim of that unfortunate phenomenon is the storied Monte Carlo.  Introduced in 1970, and proudly parked in over half a million driveways during its first three years of production, the brand's 'personal luxury coupe' was decidedly cool.  And, not as ostentatious as a Corvette or as boorish as a Camaro, the car spent most of its life as the poster child for evolving automotive tastes.

For consignment, this 1984 Monte Carlo version has spent most of its life, (30 years), gracing the consignor's garage and life.  It has its original two tone paint,  interior, and the 305ci V8 with only 48,584 miles that are believed to be original.  Some polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are on the corners but otherwise it's a real survivor.

Exterior
From 1984 square and rectangle design form this Monte.  The panels are straight, the paint is good with a few scrapes and chips in the Light and Dark Briar Brown factory finish.  Some rust is forming at the edges of the trim spears running through the centers.  A neoprene integrated body matching front bumper adds a touch of class along with the chrome and black eggcrate grille and dual outboard square headlights.  A chromed arrowhead badged hood ornament leads the way for the long slightly bumped up hood which stretches back to the stainless trimmed raked back windshield.  Beige pinstriping graces the sides of this skate and highlights the bumped out body lines that have been a part of the Monte Carlo lineup since the beginning.  Wide mirror finish trimming follows the entire bottom of the car and accentuated the mid body black thin vinyl strip perfectly.   On top, the Dark Briar Brown, also used on the hood, frames clear glass including a large opera window on the B pillar for the rear passengers.  Out back is another neoprene body matching bumper and just above is a 2-bedroom apartment sized trunk flanked by wide cathedral style tail lights.  14-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are wrapped by front 195/75R14's and in back staggered 215/70R14's all from 1994.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see molded brown vinyl panels, some tuck and roll center uppers, molded plastic for the armrests and lower carpeting.  These door panels are peppered with a shiny crank for windows, and a mirror joystick, as well as the lock golf tee on the sill.  Inside is more brown but now we've switched to a triangle tweed pattern broadcloth for the wide tuck and roll front split bench and smooth vinyl is on the bolsters and an adjustable headrest is atop each seat back.  A rear bench is present and accounted for and also looking good.  These chairs are all floating in a sea of unfaded brown carpeting in good condition.  A brown molded plastic dash with a wood burl appliqué  instrument cluster surround which houses the rally style gauge package gauges is fronted by a tilt steering column and factory installed 2 spoke steering wheel.  The heat and A/C slides are within the confines of a center panel in square format, as well as an AM/FM/Cassette radio.  More faux wood races across the front of the dash and gives the passenger a lovely view.  A  slightly sagging brown liner is above with some stainless ribs in the seams on the underside of the top.

Drivetrain
Under the hood within the confines of an unrestored and lightly patina engine bay sits a 305ci V8 topped with a single 4-barrel carburetor and backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission.  The rear axle gladly accepts this mill and transmissions combo of power and is a 10-bolt 2.29 axle.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust on the underside of the frame edges can be seen as well as patina and slight road dirt throughout, but the flooring remains strong and solid.  Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the back and from this engine single exhaust snakes rearward through a newer exhaust system with a Flowmaster muffler.  Giving us the plush comfy ride is an independent coil spring front suspension and a 4 link and coil spring rear suspension.  All looking good in the neighborhood.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good acceleration with the 4-barrel topper, this car handled the test track and all its paces with ease.  Snappy braking and smooth cornering with a little roll in cornering.  All functions were working for this survivor from Orwell's 1984.

We give you a nice example of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.  Looks are good on the two tone paint front, and the interior is clean and original from 1984.  Why fit into the confines of mediocrity when you can stand out from the crowd and be the envy of your neighborhood with a full factory version done up on a future collectible.
