1969 Ford Mustang Sportsroof

1969 Ford Mustang Sportsroof

The age old debate is revolving around this car and in particular whether its a Sportsroof or a Fastback.  The general consensus is that it is whatever you want to call it.  Actually Ford refers to the 1968 model as the fastback, and the 1969 model as the sportsroof, but you be the judge.

For consignment, a 1969 Mustang sportsroof in maroon metallic.  This car has slight body damage and needs a bit of TLC for the exterior and interior.  It does however run great.

Exterior
Nicely sculpted steel with distinct Mustang features which carry over from the original design like sunken single headlights, a squared off chrome edged black grille with some extra lights within its egg crate confines and the triple tail lighting on either side of the rear all look like they have been put on steroids.  The hockey stick cove is not on this car, instead it sports some rear quarter open vents.  Of course the sportsroof has a long slow grade as it descend to the trunk deck.  This goes well with the maroon metallic.  Chrome is looking good and gaps are just a bit off the doors and rear quarters.  The rear taillight panel has some damage.  14-inch styled steel wheels are nice and shiny and are wrapped in black wall rubber that will need to be replaced to run around safely.  Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

Interior
Some slightly wrinkled black vinyl covers the door panels.  A shiny actuator inset into the panel and a shiny window crank along with a comfy armrest are mounted within the smooth black panels.  The lower panel is missing on the driver's side.  Inside, high back bucket seats with tuck and roll inserts and black smooth bolsters and headrests are the chairs in front.  These are currently covered with sheepskin furry coverings, so it's difficult to tell the exact condition of buckets.  A black 2 plus 2 bench is on the back and it is worn.  Older black carpeting covers the floors, and the headliner is coming off at the B pillars.  The carpeted hump is between these buckets and houses the factory T shifter.  A Ford factory  steering wheel fronts the original dash which is a series of deep set round gauges lined up under a squared off eyebrow dash top.  In the center is an aftermarket Kraco AM/FM/Cassette radio, and the climate control sliders just below the radio.  In front of the passenger is another high squared off eyebrow that has no galloping Mustang badge, and a glove box below.  Very sporty and reminiscent of an aircraft interior.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, is a beautifully restored and well worked 302ci V8.  It is original to this car.  A single 2-barrel carb is on top and on back is the factory C4 3-speed automatic tranny which pushes power rearward to a Ford 8 inch 2.79 gear rear axle.  All looking unrestored and patina in its blue valve covering and air cleaner snoot.  Newer looking wiring running to each of the 8 cylinders plugs.

Undercarriage
Some heavier surface rust is seen on the suspension parts and it's a bit lighter on the unibody edges and floor pans.  Other areas have some chipped off back undercoating.  Independent coil spring suspension is in front, and leaf springs for the rear.  Drum brakes are on all 4 corners.  I see stock exhaust.

Drive-Ability
This was a nice car to drive with decent power, great handling, and smooth operation overall.  It can go in a straight line fast, and corner with the best of them.  All was in good sound mechanical and otherwise working condition although it did pull to the left and it really needs new tires to be safe.

A fair to good example of the '69 sportsroof that will need some overall TLC and refreshing to make it a real champ.  Recent maintenance and garaged since 1986.
