1940 Ford F1 Pickup

1940 Ford F1 Pickup

This model truck series began in 1938 using components similar in appearance to its passenger cars such as the hood, grill and windshield styling.  The spare tire was placed on the right-hand side between the cab and the rear fender.  Many people believe the 1940 Ford pickup truck is one of the best-looking pickups ever made.   It featured passenger car front end styling, fender-integrated headlights with egg-shaped bezels and a vertical-bars V grille.

For consignment, a 1940 Ford F1 pickup truck that is not your typical '40 Ford.  Let's do a little exchange where we take the original worker truck and turn into a showstopper!  This rad rod truck now has a consignor-stated 327ci V8, disc brakes in front, a beautiful custom molded and carpeted bed interior with a vinyl hydraulic piston assist bed topper.  All in show condition, and who can resist those beautiful lines?

Exterior
The 1940 sheet metal was worked straight and shaved of a few items like the badges and door handles, all gone along with a chopped roof and tinted glass.  Up front, the grille has been retained in shiny chrome vertical ribs and the dual Vee shapes and it's just a stopper of shows.  On either side are the oval wide bezel teardrop headlights also chromed.  A shiny simple curved bumper is below.  The deep end of the pool Guardsman Red takes over…big time!  A note to the lower line on the front of the truck, as it's like a reclining nude, curvaceous, appealing and wildly attractive.  A tall rounded hood is masterfully fitted into the body which is all worked steel so the gaps are well minded and panels are all laser straight.  Looking much like they were shaped on an English wheel, the gracefully undulating exaggerated curved fenders roll up and down in their rounded form and are attached by a running board which extends to the bed forming a “step side” just prior to the curved rear fenders.  Around back, the bed tailgate has been simplified with vertical frenched mini tail lights on either corner next to the tailgate.  The bed is all flat straight steel and also painted hot rod RED!  The inside has been adorned with custom molded and embossed panels and all are now covered with oil gray carpeting.  The long red vinyl top flips up via hydraulic tubes and keeps the carpeted bed inside all dry.  A curved bumper frames the bottom of the tail and peeking out from either side is an exhaust pipe just below the rear quarters. 15-inch highly polished hurricane style Weld wheels are now on all 4 corners.

Interior
Taking things to the next level: a remote pop of the doors and on top first is just red painted metal.  Some textured deep blue tweed panels take over and these have 2 highlighting stripes in light blue and red running vertically near the fronts of the panels.  Window toggles and a custom armrest are in.  Taking a look inside and we see a custom bench seat presenting itself in more blue textured tweed broadcloth.  The inserts are tucked and rolled and the bolsters are smooth and wide.  In back of the bench is more blue tweed for the vertical rear window panel.  In front a metal dash painted in Guardsman Red has been simplified to a single metal panel and has black faced black bezel VDO gauges all lined up showing engine vitals for the driver.  Fronting the dash is a more modern chrome 4 spoke black leather wrapped rally wheel on a tilt column.  Nice clean dark blue woven carpeting floods the floors and in the center rising toward the driver is a Gennie shifter and handbrake.  Just above on the bottom of the dash is a custom made box to house the AC and heat vents, all covered in tweed broadcloth.  The headliner is also covered in blue and has some embossed ribs within its field.

Drivetrain
A swing of that tall sculpted hood gives us full access for any potential wrenching we may want to do.  You'll be doing it on a beautiful looking 327ci V8 that has a Crane camshaft fitted within.  It's topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and the intake has been cleaned to perfection, probably to team up with the chromed ribbed valve coverings, and chromed air cleaner covering on top.  On back is a TH400 3-speed automatic tranny terming up with a 10-bolt 2.73 rear.  Also throw in some braided stainless hoses, supple wires and a dual Magnaflow muffler exhaust.  A nice complement of a HOT engine to go with that RED paint!

Undercarriage
Nice black painted X frame and floor pans under here.  All clean and plenty of open space for the transverse leaf springs in the front, and leaf springs in back.  Also disc brakes are in front and drums for the back.

Drive-Ability
Turn the key and put a smile on your face.  It is that easy to start and drive!  The test track just loved this truck as did the truck love the test track!  Powerful smooth acceleration, easy smooth automatic shifting through that TH400 and braking was solid.  Power steering helps when you want to carve a curve.   Press the gas and snap your neck or just drive by someone and try to snap theirs looking at you!

A runner and a stunner, this beautiful modified example of the 1940 Ford F1 pickup is a turnkey truck.  Clear the mantle as there will be trophies to put there as you travel around in this reliable RED radical rod with its beautiful 1940 styling.
