1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport Convertible

1972 Pontiac Lemans Sport Convertible

While the Pontiac GTO gets all the accolades and high selling prices to go along with the hoopla, truth be told, its sibling, the Le Mans is basically the same car.  The LeMans is a great alternative to spending tens of thousands on a GTO, as both cars share the same sheet metal, interior components and most mechanical parts.  The 1968 to 1972 LeMans models are among the best-looking Pontiacs ever manufactured and are quite plentiful, with nearly 673,000 built.  Finding parts is easy due to a huge supply of parts and a strong aftermarket.

For consignment the more affordable LeMans Sport Convertible from 1972.  This particular car is numbers matching, has correct interior and exterior colors as well as a newer fully operational top.  Our consignor purchased this car from the original owner who bought the car off the lot in Lehighton, PA from the Fisher dealership.  It holds the AACA HPOF 2023 award from Hershey for the original features category.

Exterior
With that AACA original features emblem, we see nothing but pure perfection on the exterior of this car.  Bathed in miles deep code 65A, Sundance Orange, which covers laser straight steel panels with awesomely minded gaps everything about this car is straight and true.  The paint shows a few faults in some previous bondo repairs and light orange peel as well as some rub off around the trimming edges.  A thin black and chrome edged spear has been added at the midline, which coincidentally aligns with the rear bumper and flirts with the tops of the wheel wells.  Stainless also covers the rockers.  The bumpers and all chrome are the beneficiary of some careful caretaking and these shine like a crazy diamond.  Above the front bumper is a split grille which has the Pontiac beak and that is flanked by dual headlights with shiny bezels.  To the rear and we see inset wrap around the rear quarter taillights in the back bumper, more straight steel for the rear quarters and trunk lid.  The newer white canvas convertible top is power activated, moves up and down smoothly, and has a nice black interior headliner.  The rear glass window is clear.  Correct 14-inch wheels with turbine styled red center badged hubcaps are all around and these are wrapped by thin whitewalls from 1991.

Interior
Moving to the interior, which is covered in Ivory vinyl from the door panels to the seats, which are buckets with adjustable headrests in front and a long and clean bench in the rear.  These nicely preserved seats are floating in a sea of black unfaded carpet and have some plastic wrapping on them.  This wrapping is yellowed but it has worked as the driver's seat is white as the driven snow.  There is a center console and it has a wood appliqué panel within its top.  The dash is all original and presents in padded unfaded and uncracked black with some wood appliqué for the deep inset trio of round gauges.  Fronting this beautiful dash is a correct 3 spoke steering wheel.  The original GM AM/FM Delco radio is mounted within a horizontal machined spun aluminum pattern trim strip, and actually works.

Drivetrain
All numbers matching under the hood and below, we see an original unrestored 350ci V8 topped by a correct Rochester  2-barrel carburetor.  On the back is a numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission.  Also, the rear axle with a YR stamping code is a 10 bolt 2.56 gear setup.  Blue paint covers the valve coverings and the block shows some heavy surface rust, and the alternator is corroded as well.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust for the usual suspects like the suspension, axle driveshaft and brake drums.  Otherwise its heavy factory undercoating in black.  A stock exhaust snakes its way rearward, passing independent coil springs up front, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear.  Power disc brakes are on the front and power drums for the back.

Drive-Ability
A beautiful driver that started right up and handled our test track, passing with flying colors.  Good acceleration, nice cruising, and great brakes and we were all safe here.  The clock was not working.

A truly wonderful example of the LeMans Sport, which has had only 2 very caring owners, and it shows.  A first place AACA winner, and a stunner to view in person.  You'll need to do that by showing up to the Classic Auto Mall, but in the meantime take a gander at the pictures and see if you can find anything else wrong.
