1930 Ford Model A Coupe 

When viewing a 1930 Model A you will notice on the hardtops there is a cloth/canvas covering the top.  There is much speculation as to why this is and there are basically 3 reasons for this.  Number 1 is Henry Ford was cheap!  Number 2 is steel was in demand and would raise vehicle costs, and 3 is the technology for welding such a large piece of steel did not exist, and even if it was put on, the road conditions of the time would have certainly quickly bent such a large panel.  

For consignment, as the consignor states, this is not your grandfather's Model A Ford.  It has some nice modifications  although it manages to retain much of its original charm.  It was originally built in Canada and now has a 192ci Ford industrial engine, and a custom chassis to support the extra weight and horsepower.  It has 1940 Ford hydraulic brakes, a 1940 Ford 3.78 axle, a custom aluminum radiator to keep things cool and a Lebarron Bonney interior.  

Exterior
Simplistic yet wonderfully designed and leading the way is a rare 1932 truck grille shell surround with flanking large headlights encased in chrome and sans a bumper below that arrives in satin black painted style.  The hood is minus its side cowls to show the big red engine off.  Black curved fenders have a running board keeping them together and these frame black 16-inch wire wheels with Cragar chromed cpas.  A black painted canvas top for the “cab” with a satin black metal sun visor showing in good condition.  Just below the C curved trunk and on the back end of this car is a new set of tail lights which are more inset then the originals and these have a chromed bezel.  Dual exhaust peek out of the rear roll pan and these are protected by a chromed round bar stock custom made bumper.  The paint has numerous areas of chipping going on and there are several scratches within the paint throughout.  The consignor states the paint is courtesy of Rust-O-Leum! 

Interior
Very nice gray canvas like textured tweed from LeBaron Bonney covers the door panels which are like new.  Shiny handles and cranks are in this field of gray.  A single overstuffed tuck and roll bench sits in front and is also checked tweed in cream and black.  Wide piping is on the edges and the chair sits within an upholstered tub.  Fronting the bench is a full black painted slightly curved upward dash, and in its center is a “mask” style rusted and patina dash panel.  On the steering column a trio of gauges is mounted to the column in a cast plate looking older in its design.  A large bakelite steering wheel is on top of the column.  Flooring is a mix of rubber panels and steel, some of it bare metal under the seats.  The headliner is fuzzy broadcloth and is in darker gray with some center stitching to add to the overstuffed effect.  All vertical surfaces in this interior are covered with the similar material to the door panels.

Drivetrain
Under the open cowled hood we now witness a blazing red painted 192ci Ford industrial engine.  The cylinder head has been ported and polished, and a Camcraft ground camshaft is installed.  It has a 1-barrel carburetor and back is a 1939 Ford 3-speed manual transmission with a lightened flywheel.  The rear axle weighs in at 3.78 and is from a 1940 Ford.  A more modern alternator is on and the radiator is a custom made aluminum version.

Undercarriage
The chassis has been strengthened, and the floor pans are rust free.  Transverse leaf springs are on for the suspension.  The front is a mono leaf and it supports a 2 inch dropped axle. There is a '48-'52 F1 pickup truck crossmember and an F1 steering box.  1940 hydraulic brakes are on, all in drum form.

Drive-Ability
Cue the Charleston music!  The car started right up and drove very nicely.  It had easy steering and the interior was very comfy with the new upholstery.  The horn wouldn't honk but all else worked swimmingly.

An interesting build with a wonderful Lebarron Bonney interior, runs great, and has all the right charm to make it appear mostly original with some nice upgrades.
