1984 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0

1984 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0

The Alfa Romeo Spider, (105/115 series), is a two-seater, front-engined, rear-drive roadster manufactured and marketed by Alfa Romeo from 1966 to 1994 in four distinct generations, or "series", each with modifications ranging from modest to extensive.  As successor to the Giulia Spider, the Spider remained in production for almost three decades.  The first three series were assembled by Pininfarina in Grugliasco and the fourth series in San Giorgio Canavese.  The last Spider of that series was manufactured in April 1993—the last rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo before the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione of 2007.  The Series 3 Spider debuted in North America for the 1982 model year with the introduction of 2.0 litre Bosch electronic fuel injection to replace the SPICA mechanical fuel injection.  The Spider received a further styling revision in 1983, with introduction of black rubber front and rear bumpers, a front bumper incorporating the grille, a small soft rubber spoiler added to the rear kammback, and various other minor mechanical and aesthetic modifications.  The 1600 car, (never available in North America), dropped the "Junior" name.  The Spider was made famous as Dustin Hoffman's sports car in the movie “The Graduate.”

Offered for consignment,  an 85,501 non-actual mile 1984 Series 3 Spider in Grigio Chiaro with a great black interior and black canvas top.  This beautiful Alfa has had “tasteful and functional” improvements added to enhance the performance and beauty of the original production model which include an updated and rebuilt fuel system with 2 new pumps, a cleaned fuel tank, and new tires.  Best of all there is no rust....really!

Exterior
One can tell Pininfarina had their hands in this design.  A very thin body, (not tall), long front with exposed headlights, and a small back trunk area.  Dressed in Grigio Chiaro, that's platinum silver to the layperson, this Graduate has been stored in a garage environment all its life and it shows.  Virtually no rust, blemishes or even fade on the bumpers are seen on this car.  As a matter of fact, the only notable flaw in the body is a slight ding in the lower left of the front valance.  Minimal badging and brite work is adorning the car, but what is there is near perfect.  A black rear of the car with a small matching spoiler can be seen behind the trunk area.  Slightly curb rashed and marred 14-inch Alfa Romeo alloy wheels are seen all around and are wrapped by Nexen blackwall radials in 185/65R14 format from the 34th week of 2019.  A slightly dusty black convertible top appears covering the passenger compartment and displays with a few small tears along with a very lightly frosted plastic rear window.

Interior
Black vinyl adorns the door panels and shows as nearly new.  Dressing these panels up are 3d door pulls/armrests with silver inserts, a small map pocket, and shiny chrome actuators.  Black carpet floods the floor and is in good condition and it supports a pair of black leather clad buckets with puffy tuck and roll inserts and smooth black bolsters.  There is some slight age wrinkling of the leather noted on both seats, but the seams and piping remain intact and in good condition.  A short center console has the cigar lights and ash receptacle, power window controls, and a wood knob topped gearshift that is mounted ergonomically in the vertical rising portion, as opposed to between the seats on the floor.  Wood surrounds a beautiful steering wheel and this beauty fronts the deeply inset duo of gauges that appear somewhat like the large end of binoculars.  Dash central is holding a trio of supporting auxiliary gauges along with a row of warning lights and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD radio.

Drivetrain
Under the long nosed hood resides a 2.0 liter double overhead cam 4-cylinder engine.  This small but mighty mill can make a peak 115hp with the help of Bosch L-Jetronic EFI.  A 5-speed manual transmission backs the engine up and sends power rearward to a 4.10 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Only black patina riddled steel and light surface rust is seen gracing this undercarriage and barely any drip residue is seen on any surfaces.  Giving this sports car its ride is independent coil sprung front suspension which works in conjunction with a swing arm and coil spring rear suspension.  Power disc brakes are seen all around and we note a new fuel sending unit, hoses, and both fuel pumps have been replaced.  A stock replacement style single exhaust is on for the exhale and it's time for some top down fun in the sun.

Drive-Ability
A test drive in this Spider was a thing of beauty as this writer has always dreamt of owning one of these cars.  This Spider started easily thanks to the Bosch EFI and idled smoothly.  The transmission shifted up and down well save for the 1-2 shift either having to be double clutched or shifted slowly, and the braking was adequate.   Always a snappy handling car, it got my heart racing with some wind in my hair, and the throaty exhaust sound went a long way to calm the soul.  About the only flaw to note is that there is a single key for the car which does not unlock the doors, but handily turns the ignition.

This Alfa clearly has always been garaged and covered since new and never driven in rain or inclement weather and there is absolutely no rust present anywhere on the car.  This Alfa Romeo Spider is one of the finest you will find anywhere and draws attention everywhere it goes.  It speaks to the word cool.
