1987 Jeep Wrangler YJ

1987 Jeep CJ7

The Wrangler YJ was made from 1987 up until 1985.  The engine of this model became more productive and the U-joints were broader.  This jeep has some differences from other models but the most outstanding of them is the shape of the headlights.  The Wrangler YJ featured square headlights which makes it very easy to spot anywhere.  Many criticized this bold design move but owners of this model like to defend themselves from being unique people.  If you dare to be different, going for this obvious Jeep model makes sense.  The Wrangler YJ featured a slightly different grille from previous models.  The grille was slightly rounded at mid-point.  This design was still reflected in the TJ version later on.  This model looked a lot like the CJ model but had more in common with the XJ model regarding design.  If ever there was a different jeep model it would be the YJ.  This is the one and only model with square headlights which a lot of Jeep customers seemed to dislike.  These different headlights caused a lot of insults to this model than any other Jeep ever built but it also made the Wrangler YJ very easy to spot.  Apart from the headlights, the YJ is not so different from the CJ model.  Both Jeeps were made for civilians and the former was a successor of the latter.  The leaf springs for suspension on the YJ were broader than the CJ and the front grille was different as it featured a bend almost halfway.  The body of both models was, however, almost indistinguishable.  Development for the Wrangler YJ began in 1982 as a possible replacement for the Wrangler C7.  Design went on in 1983 and by 1984, first models for testing were finished.  The evolution finished at the end of 1985 when the first steps advanced into production.  In the start of 1986, the 1987 Wrangler YJ was revealed.  Production began shortly after and the vehicle was available before the middle of the same year.

For consignment, a first year 1987 version of the venerable Jeep Wrangler YJ.  This comes to us done right with a 350/350 powertrain combination, a new fuse box and wiring, updated but still rectangle headlights, redone suspension, a really snazzy digital camo paint scheme, a Ziebarted tub and undercarriage, and a matching camo paint hardtop.  Add in some new wheels and tires, a front mounted winch, auxiliary lighting on the exoskeleton roll cage and fresh Pennsylvania emissions and safety inspection and you are ready to brave the wilds of scenic Morgantown, PA or grab your groover and your camping gear and do some off roading in the Badlands of South Dakota.

Exterior
From its Rhino-lined 6 vertical bar front end with the close updated LED headlights on either side, to the squared off and smoked turn signal lights just below, it is iconic looking and reminiscent of the earlier versions which served our country during the wars.  Leading the way is a custom front bumper with not only fishing poles holders for those stopovers at the mountain lake but also a Badlands winch with a new cable to help you reel in that big fish, or get yourself unstuck should you find yourself way off the beaten path.  It has flanking fenders in front with plastic guards to minimize the mud which may inevitably get in your face while trudging through the trails.  All of the steel has been massaged to perfection and then coated with a digital camo paint scheme with varying areas of white, black and gray...trippy dude!  Some removable full doors with roll up glass, a roll bar and exoskeleton roll bar with a roof rack for your extras and a long thin lightbar flanked on the sides by small round LED lighting and the truck is otherwise open to the elements.  (That's the way I like it, UH HUH, UH HUH).  We see a bright red jack strapped to the flip up hood and just in front of the windshield are....you guessed it, more LED lighting.  Large 15-inch drilled and mirror polished ProComp wheels are wrapped by new 35x12R15LT Cooper M/T mud slinging tires all around and bridging the gap between the front and rear wheels are Rock Sliders step bars.  A swing away aware tire hangs off of the rear and when out of the way access to a small storage area via a fold down gate is seen.  A new black rear bumper with dual D-ring hooks is seen in the back and a trailer hitch is noted on the bottom.

Interior
With no doors on for balance I donned my parachute and climbed up the patented Classic Auto Mall step ladder and moved myself into the freshly Ziebart coated body tub.  Here I parked my ample posterior on one of the clean high backed integrated headrest black vinyl bucket seats in front and with a turn of my head I gazed upon a matching small rear bench in back.  These seats appear as new and are flanking a black padded lockable vinyl console complete with cupholders and the full monte of rocker switches for the auxiliary lighting as well as USB ports.  The floors have a coating of textured paint, so it doesn't matter if it gets wet or muddy, just hose it off!  In front, a full metal jacket digital camo painted dash front that is peppered with a black padded panel for a topper and a central instrument panel in plastic.   Round gauges and some pulls are within this panel along with an aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo.  The steering wheel appears original to the truck and has a central Jeep badge on it.  A short arm B&M ratchet shift lever reaches for the driver and to its right is a custom wrench level for the transfer case.  A final glance at the dash before my parachute trip back to terra firma reveals a top mounted gauge pod with a compass and pitch and roll angle meters.  GERONIMOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a new 350ci HO Chevrolet V8 crate motor.  This chrome dressed mill sits within a very clean satin black fully restored engine bay with supple hoses and wiring.  This has an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor to feed it along with an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is bolted on back.  The axles spec out with a Dana 30 old school locker axle in the front and a Dana 35 axle in the rear.

Undercarriage
Full rust free and protected by an ample coating of Ziebart Rhino-Liner is what meets our eyes with this off roader up in the air.  Leaf spring suspension are on for the front and rear suspension and we note new shocks all around and a new steering damper.  Also seen is an adjustable track bar, removable swaybar end links, and the center portion of the Rock Slider protecting the transmission and transfercase.  On the 4 corners are power disc brakes on front, and power drums for the rear.  A headers are on for the mighty exhale and work together with high flow catalytic converters and true dual Magnaflow stainless steel exhaust.

Drive-Ability
Open air, smooth acceleration and easy shifting allow this 4x4 to be driven daily or just hit the trail and get away when the shit comes down.  Open to the elements so you will be very accustomed to the outside weather when you arrive at your campsite or grab a few friends and throw on that matching hardtop and your doors and roll this functional skate year round.

Grab your groover, mount the kayak and go exploring, climbing, camping and whatever else we do in the great outdoors.  Let's get a little mud on the tires!
