1979 Jeep CJ7

1979 Jeep CJ7

The Expediciones De Las Americas is the most badass road trip you've never heard of.  A couple of decades after starting the Jamboree, Mark A. Smith led an expedition of Jeeps on the longest off-road trip in history, trekking 21,000 miles over some of the world's most inhospitable terrain, from the southernmost tip of Chile to the northern reaches of Alaska. In the 4x4's first public outing, it was driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol.  When asked what it was, the driver replied simply, “It's a jeep.”  Two years later, Willys-Overland filed a trademark application.

For consignment, a CJ (Civilian's Jeep) version 7 from 1979.  This frame off rotisserie restoration performed 7800 miles ago went through a painstakingly meticulous process retaining all the original metal, new glass and interior seating.  A 78k mile 360ci V8 under the hood, every nut and bolt was weatherproof, and plenty of add ons to immerse yourself into this one we bolted on.  Here we go in rebuilt transmission and transfer case all wheel drive style!

NOTE: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.

Exterior
A thorough sandblasting then careful priming was performed on every steel panel of this Jeep.  Then it was top coated in miles deep olive green metallic paint.  Any chrome accenting was then sprayed black to add contrast to the exterior.  A black texture coated twin tube front bumper was put on in front, and it has a pair of KC lights on top to light your way on those midnight trail rides.  Black paint covers the roll cage and it sports a canvas sunshade safari top.  33x12.5 R15LT knobby mud terrain tires are wrapping polished and drilled wheel rims on the corners and add to the off roader look.  Black plastic flares accentuate the wheel arches and a swing away spare tire holder is in the back holding an additional tire if you get into some real trouble!  Black texture finish wraps the rockers of this Jeep and small step bars help you climb into the interior.

Interior
As we make our way through the half door entry, we perch on top of one of 2 medium back body hugging buckets in black vinyl with smooth bolsters and horizontal tuck and roll inserts.  In back, a small fold down bench is now installed.  Texture coated all weather black paint floods the floors and just forward of the driver's bucket on the side of the hump is the transfer case range lever.  Upfront is more textured black for the painted dash with a central gauge cluster in the round with a bevy of knobs and pulls to the left and 2 added gauges and an all weather AM/FM/CD stereo that pumps the tunes through all weather speakers.  just below is a power bank with a small toggle, USB port and 12 volt power outlet.  A 4 spoke Jeep badged rally style steering wheel is fronting this dash.

Drivetrain
As I loosen the front lockdowns, and raise the hood and I have found a place to eat my lunch…yes it's that clean.  Fully restored, a nice blue painted block, and HEI ignition with yellow high voltage wires draw our eyes deeper in.  We are peering at a consignor stated 78,000 mile 360ci inline 8 cylinder engine and it is showroom condition.  It is topped by a new Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and we see new hoses, a new radiator, and a new water pump have been bolted on.  Bolted to the back is a rebuilt 3-speed automatic transmission and rebuilt all wheel drive transfer case.  In front there is a Dana 30 axle, and on back an AMC 20 rear axle.

Undercarriage
In keeping with the get tough theme, no stone has been left unturned, (or for that matter driven over!).  Here we see a very clean undercarriage.  This features leaf spring suspension in the front and rear, stainless steel brake lines and pair of shiny headers bolted to the mill that join up with side pipes so you can let the wildlife know it's your wilderness now.  A new master cylinder and booster actuate the power disc brakes in front, and power drums for the back.  Our consignor notes that the brakes are all new with new rotors, pads, and calipers.  The frame, much like the rest of the undercarriage, has been finished in a texture paint but shows with invasive rust in a few areas along with body filler in the frame making an appearance as well.

Drive-Ability
This beauty started right up and was ready to climb the walls and anything else we had here at Classic Auto Mall that it could drive over.  So I took it to the test track and here all was functioning well but we did note the tires rub the headers at full turn lock, the steering was a bit sloppy and the fuel gauge was not working, but our consignor is including a new sending unit.  Good acceleration, plenty of power, all gearing, low and high range drives were working , and the sound system was awesome.  The seats are comfy and in the open air one feels a sense of freedom, although when a semi goes by it makes you think about that exterior being right there!

A frame off restoration with even nut and bolt weather-proofed during the reassembly, along with plenty of other special add ons and upgrades.  Now we have a comfy, beautiful social climber, and mountain climber that can go virtually anywhere.
