1956 Ford Customline Club Sedan

1956 Ford Customline Club Sedan

Creating its own niche by being 1 notch below the Fairlane and one above the Mainline, the Customline featured unique body style moldings and borrowed from the T bird for tail fins and tail lights.  The club sedan was the 2 door version of the model.  It was a mostly utilitarian car but with many features like dual sun visors, armrests aplenty and a unique dash cluster.

For consignment, a 1956 2 door Customline Club sedan.  This car is a show winner.  It has a few upgrades like an MSD ignition, painless wiring, Vintage AC and heat, wire wheels, power steering, power disc braking and new springs and shocks.  Plus it looks the part by retaining all its '56 trimmings and 2 tone design. It sports a newer engine and transmission and has an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor.  Check it out for the 50's look but newer performance and mechanicals.  Kewl!

Exterior
The Customline has the look of a 50's Ford but with s few exaggerated lines.  This is particularly true for the exaggerated more forward headlights on either corner of the front quarters.  It has a curved egg crate grille in chrome and some nifty wrap-around bumpers and large turn signal bezels that emulate the bumper below.  This car is in two tone Fiesta Red and Colonial White and this motif is definitely exaggerated by the central delineating swoop spear chromed molding running through the sides.  The red starts on the upper headlight areas of the quarters and rolls over to become the swoop in the center of the doors with the white above and red below.  It then runs to the center of the rear rocket style tail lights and small fins.  Th door uppers are in white but the roof offers up a surprise as it changes over to more red.  Speaking of the roofline the car features front and rear wrap around glass with the rear being tinted as is the side glass.  A chrome rocker trim adds some highlight to the bottom of the car and along with this we see faux knockoff style hubs with wire wheels.  These shiny wheels are wrapped with thin whitewall tires in 215/75R15 form.  A shout the the rear of the car with the Thunderbird styling, small pointy triangular fins with backup light on top of round jet engine linking tail lighting.  A shiny bumper is just below and some chrome dual exhaust protrudes proudly out of each corner.  Paint is nearly perfect with just a few scratches from polishing and a minor array of chips which are barely noticeable even upon close inspection.

Interior
Just like walking back in time to a metal diner made most likely by a company named Silk City, ( I've had many a question on this so I'm finally explaining it!), the interior drips 50's styling.  It shows in blazing red and white and uses an interplay of said colors to create the vertical red ribbed door panels with the white insert.  A full on red tuck and roll bench with the slips back for the rear bench access which is in the same pattern.  Fronting the bench is a vintage two tone steering wheel, (red and white), and just aft of this wheel is the original design dash.  It has a deep crescent instrument cluster under a hooded red metal dash top.  The cluster is in white and has a series of circular black face gauges with shiny bezels and red pointers.  A thin white steel horizontal band is running through the dash center and features a few knobs and pulls and an added on AC central vent.  Just below for the dash bottom is a rounded over red panel which has the chrome edged radio and climate sliders.  The Vintage Air controller hangs below this stunner of a dash, as does a trio of aftermarket gauges to keep the pulse on the mill.  Floating in the red carpeting in front of the seat is a Lokar shifter and an AM/FM digital radio with a CD player all mounted neatly on the hump.  Plenty of red, plenty low tuck and roll and plenty of goodness in this modernized interior.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood reveals a surprise in the form of an airbrushed Chrystals Drive In diner scene.  This artwork looks down on a newer 302ci V8.  It sports a Weiand intake and an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor.  On back is a C4 3-speed automatic that is throwing power from the 302 cubes to a 3.78 rear axle.  In addition to the visual airbrushed paint the hood underside, the restorer went to some extra lengths with additional chroming for various parts of the engine, and some red wiring for the MSD ignition, as well as a like new master cylinder.

Undercarriage
It looks line the undercarriage does not want to be outdone by the topside, so it has solid framing that is all black and rust free.  A new coating of textured rustproofing and a new fuel tank are also seen here now.  The floor pans and inner fenders are just perfect and we can note shiny dual glass pack style exhaust.  Independent coil springs are up front, and leaf springs are on back .  Noted these have new shocks and springs.  Power disc brakes improve the front braking and power drums are now on back.  A totally drip free underbelly for this Clubber.

Drive-Ability
This car fired up with a mighty roar and off to the test track where I always first test the panic stop and this one passed with bias free flying colors.  Acceleration was great and the handling as smooth and effortless as could be with the new shocks and springs.  Power steering makes driving this classic a breeze.  All functions were working just fab!

This car has undergone several upgrades but retains its original charm and design.  It's a sleeper and not near anything like any 50's clunker may be when unkempt.  Not this example, hurry on up to the clicker, (mouse), or get on in our Hallowed Halls as this my first encounter with this example of Ford will not be here long fer sur!
