1969 Cadillac DeVille Convertible

1969 Cadillac DeVille Convertible

With all the talk about Hot Rods, Horsepower, Handling, and Speed, there is almost no room left for just plain old cruising.  There is something to be said about hopping in a huge automobile, dropping the top, and going for a drive.  Remember the Sunday drive?  Whatever happened to that tradition?  When gas was cheap, and big metal was plentiful, what better way to spend an afternoon?

For consignment, a boulevard cruiser, long and lean, convertible and cool, this '69 Caddy remains in nice condition with a few blemishes, comes with a fine mix of vinyl and leather to grab you when you sit in, and has a nice working convertible top.  Under the hood it has the big, big, V8 to get that mass up to speed in a hurry, and a smooth TH400 automatic transmission to save a little gas, but then who cares?  You are showing up in total style with a car from an era where success was measured by the inch.

Exterior
Cotillion White, a very befitting name for this luxury status symbol covers the mostly straight steel panels that are minding their gaps nicely.  A few blemishes in the paint that have been touched up, sanding marks, evidence of bodywork and some rust bubbling on the lower panels toward the rear of the car are noted, but overall nice paint exists.  A contrasting black convertible top looks fab when it's up, and feels fab when it's down, and it works perfectly.  The chrome and brite-work is in good condition with just slight areas of the beginnings of fading, and minor dimpling.  Chromed 15-inch wire wheels with Cadillac logo covered spinner hubs and thin wide whites keep this large and in charge car planted to the ground, and you are screaming classy all the way.

Interior
It just doesn't get any better than this with a sea of flax and camel leather for the seating surfaces along with smooth flax bolsters and camel center stripe inserts on the split front bench with a large armrest divider, and full-on rear bench with a rear upper chrome laden speaker.  The door panels come to us as slightly worn, especially on the driver's side door panel with a smattering of camel vinyl within a sea of Flax surrounds, and chrome, and a mind-boggling array of buttons, toggles and knobs to run all the conveniences like power windows, window locks, and a toggle side view mirror all highlighted by camel carpeted lowers.  All this floats in the low pile camel sea of carpeting if you will.  The carpet, which presents nicely, and is very clean, is covered in rubber mats at each station.  Up front, the richly padded dash is holding the factory gauges along with some black bezels, wood applique and chrome trimmings.  A shout out to the cavernous trunk with its black paint and slight surface rust.

Drivetrain
The big 472ci V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor to feed it, all clean and in great condition, sits in a very nicely preserved engine bay.  This healthy mill is backed by a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power back to a 2.94 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Copious amounts of surface rust has taken hold on the flooring and frame.  We note some invasive rust in the flooring supports, but otherwise all is unremarkable down below with a mix of undercoating and surface rust on the frame, floors, exhaust and suspension components.  Power disc brakes are on the front along with an independent coil sprung suspension while power drums are on the rear with a coil sprung 4 link setup.  Dual exhaust with stock style mufflers are in charge of the spent fossil exhale.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and after a nice warmup it gave me a nice slow boil on the test track…meaning nice acceleration, good handling for a large vehicle, and ultra-smooth ride.  Braking is top notch and save for the clock and the radio not functioning and the wipers getting stuck hitting the back of the hood, all else was in working order.

Purchasing a classic can be fraught with pitfalls, because let's face it, an older car will have maintenance to do.  This Caddy though, is in really nice condition for its age, has a nice respray, is mostly rust free, and mechanically sound as per our tests.  So, go ahead, pull the trigger and start your own parade down main street, you head turner you.
