1997 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS

SLP was founded in 1986, and their mission was to provide late model Camaro & Firebird owners with a complete selection of "Street Legal Performance" products that would improve performance, handling & fuel economy of their cars.  In 1988 SLP introduced the aftermarket industry's first "Emission Legal" performance package for the new Camaro/Firebird that led to a formal relationship with GM's Performance Parts Division, enabling performance enthusiasts to purchase SLP's products directly from any GM dealer throughout the country.  1991 represented the next milestone in SLP's 26 year history, when GM approved SLP's first speciality vehicle program, the 1992 Firebird based Firehawk.  All of the Firehawks were built in the Toms River, NJ facility and delivered to Pontiac dealers throughout the country.  In 1995 Chevrolet approved SLP's next speciality program, based off the Camaro Z28.  In addition to approving their first Chevy program, they also allowed SLP to use one of the most hallowed names in their history, the Camaro SS.  In 1996 SLP introduced it's first Camaro SS to the automotive world and received rave reviews for its stunning performance, handling and appearance.  Over the next 8 years SLP produced 55,000+ specialty vehicles for GM and all its Chevy and Pontiac dealers.  They included the Camaro SS and RS models, along with the Firebird-based Firehawk, WS-6 and Comp T/A models.  In August of 2002, GM ended production of the 4th Generation Camaro/Firebird, along with SLP's Camaro SS and Firehawk program.

For consignment, an example of the technological breakthroughs brought over into the design of this new generation Camaro, in Z28/SS form, nonetheless.  Very well maintained for this 2 owner car that was purchased by our consignor from the original owner in 2013 with a mere 59,639 miles on the odometer and still remains low today with 62,832 title verified actual miles counted.  This original and unmodified SS version of the much respected Camaro comes to us in unmolested form, carries SLP SS#935 and comes with its SLP window sticker as well as some service receipts.

Exterior
Part of the breakthrough difference that distinguishes this car from the previous generation are the use of composite plastic in the construction of the doors, front fenders, and trunk.  Steel remains only in the rear quarters and the hood.  All panels are covered with Flame Red paint, which is showing areas of discoloration, clear coat peel, hastily performed touch ups, and crazing of the finish on the neoprene components.  An aerodynamic hood with the obligatory SS scoop melts back into the 68 degree raked back windshield then is interrupted by a smoked glass “T” top roof of which can easily be removed and stored in the rear cargo area.  Very clean satin finished 17-inch 5 spoke wheels are noted on all 4 corners and are wrapped in like new 275/40ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force radials.

Interior
Deviating from the red theme we can see Ebony tuck and roll leather buckets up front and a rear bench.  Both the passenger's seat and rear bench show minor wear and what can almost be called loose material as denoted by the excess folds.  The driver's seat has taken the brunt of the use and shows age wear, minor staining, and notable wear on the left side upper bolster.  Very clean Ebony colored carpet covers the floors and is protected by Camaro SS carpeted floor mats in the front.  A black knobbed Hurst manual 6-speed shifter is seen within reach of the driver in the center console along with a small storage compartment, cup holder and ashtray.  This car comes with power locks, power windows, power mirrors, black face analog gauges, the factory AM/FM/Cassette player, and air conditioning to give you all the creature comforts you could want.

Drivetrain
A powerful 350ci LT-1 fuel injected 305hp V8 sits rearward in the engine bay for more weight balance and has a new Optispark unit installed.  A T56 6-speed manual transmission is installed which sends power back to the 3.42 Positraction geared 10-bolt rear axle.  All is stock and remains very clean for its age.

Undercarriage
Underneath remains very clean with a structurally sound unibody, 4-wheel power disc brakes, power steering, independent coil spring front suspension, and a torque arm with coil spring rear suspension.  We note a level II Bilstein sport suspension package added to the suspension along with an oil cooler.  Also seen is the SLP performance exhaust system that runs dual to single to dual chrome tail pipes on the driver's side for that true muscle car sound. 

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and off to the test track.  Here it shows every bit of that extra hp with neck snapping acceleration, rail like handling, and super smooth cruising.  When you need a panic stop brakes are totally bias free and work very well.  All functions were performing as they should on this Z28/SS Camaro and even with the low miles I took the liberty of a 2nd parade lap to soak in the Fall sunshine through the glass roof panels.

Overall, a good example of the Z28/SS Camaro.  Great color combination, some recent maintenance, and a powerful engine. This 2nd year modern Z28/SS is ripe for the picking.  Let's do some doughnuts in the parking lot to celebrate!!
